I've seen a lot of slabbed coins. Besides the usual gradings, I see stuff like BU details-improperly cleaned, or wheel marks. I looked at a 1948 Franklin on ebay, PCGS graded genuine. What would warrant a "genuine" grade. If someone sends in a Franklin, I'm sure he knows it's genuine. Why wasn't it graded any more than just genuine?
Because it is consider a problem coin. PCGS started encapsulating "problem" coins in 2008. Below is how to determine the problem with the coin in genuine holder. From the left - the coin number followed by a period, the "no grade code" assigned (such as 92 for cleaned), a slash and a certification number. A list of no grade codes is provided below: 82 Filed Rims 84 Holed and Plugged 91 Questionable Color 92 Cleaning 93 Planchet Flaw 94 Altered Surfaces 95 Scratch / Rim Dent 97 Environmental Damage 98 Damage
yeah how could it get 90? hehe they only slab legitimate stuff. well, maybe counterfeit Mexican bust halfs?
They don't get slabbed nor do the below 83 Peeling Lamination 86 No Decision 99 PVC Residue Here is a couple of links that maybe helpful. http://www.pcgs.com/grades.chtml and here http://www.pcgs.com/faq.chtml#faqid235
