I have a 1922 no d wheat penny and was wondering what it could be worth? I have looked it up and do not know if i am doing it right since all the sites are saying about $400 any help would be great!:smile
Welcome to Coin Talk! Photos are a must here. This is a coin that is often counterfeited or altered. Also, depending upon grade it could be worth less than $400 or much more than $400. There is also a weak D version.
I hope these pictures help i have looked at this thing for hours and i dont see how there could have possibly been a D there ever it looks clean but i know little about it! Help! lol!
That coin might be worth $5 as an altered 1922-D. It is not a 1922- no "D". It is entirely too well struck for any of the 4 dies. See http://lincolncentresource.com/1922Ddievarieties.html
I am not an expert on how it is done, but if they can counterfeit a mint mark and add it to a coin let alone counterfeit an entire coin, removing a mint mark ought to be easy.
mommybob- Thanks for the great photos. I agree with RLM. If you want to see some altered coins, take a look at the coins in this article. Stick around this hobby long enough, and it will blow your mind what people can accomplish altering coins! http://www.anacs.com/contentPages/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=40
Always post pictures of BOTH sides of the coin. There is something that doesn't look right with that coin. However, the weakness of the second 2 in the date is a good thing.
This is good info. That 22 is one of my last Lincoln's to complete my set. I will go after the 'weak D" though. Just to fill the hole in my IS.
I agree with Thad. It would be interesting to see both sides of this coin, as the reverse is particularly important on the 1922 No D Lincoln.
It looks from 2nd photo the number is changed from 3 or 8. Like the licoln cent comment he appear to be smiling(my guess)
