Ok here's an idea for a $2 coin design based of the Judicial branch of government. The recent Quarter desings were for the 50 staes, the territories of the US. and now the national parks. Unless I am wrong the issued four designs and continue to issue 4 different designs a year. This is over 100 different designs over a 25 year period... I did a quick search on Supreme Couurt Justices. There have been over 100 apointed and it seems 100 of those are now deceased. Why not have a similar themed production of these as well? 4 justices a year, in order of appointment pictured on the Obverse of the coin. The reverse could be an image of the Supreme Court building itself. Also, have "edge lettering" around the coin of 50 starts to signify the 50 states of the Union.
I have seen quite a few AU. But I still cannot consider any of them BU. There is always some sign that they have been placed into circulation. I know many roll searcher posters see a bright AU and call it a BU, but I don't think a TPG would be so willing to place MS grades on them ? I always pull the nice ones and check them against ones in my circulated 2x2 folders to upgrade. With the new massive release of the 2010's, it's getting tougher to find copper even. IMHO gary
The $2 bill is needed because if we had $2 coins first the strip clubs would be mad and 2nd the feds reserve banks would be having a problem with storage because there would be as big of a problem as the $1 coins now
There is only a storage problem because the $1 coins aren't being used....if the fed implemented a way to "require" people to use the $1 coins, than the "storage problem" would be eliminated, no?
It just takes will power and courage to TRY anything. Failure of the dollar coin is due to the lack of will power to get rid of the dollar bill, and the courage to see it through. Politics and business do affect what gets done it seems. Perhaps I am wrong in my thinking.
I would support removing all bills as they wear out so quickly, or changing to polymer. Even higher denominations of coins, as I seldom carry much cash in the first place. If you had the same denomination of coins as bill the government would save millions not having to reprint bills all the time. If I had a $100 coin I wouldn't need to carry many coins in my pocket with coins of all denominations. I saw a "How do they do it" show and it seems only one company prints money for paper and has had this contract for many many years. I also never spend change as all change I get during the day goes to my daughters savings. So during the day I always use what bills I have to break to get more change for the change bucket where all pennies disappear to! The other thing is I see people drop pennies and will just leave them because they don't feel they are worth picking up. Whatever happened to "Find a penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck!"?
Yes, it would be nice but I'm sure there there must be a paper lobby fighting it. Just follow the money trail.
"do we need a $2 coin? " Hell no. $1 coins don't circulate. $2 bills were a failure. Why would we need a $2 coin?
No, we waste enough money and time on the $1 coin. I feel the majority of the people do not like to carry change. When I travel outside the US I hate how much change I receive. Let's get rid of the $1 coin and save money.
It's been shown that bills are more costly from what I've read, and we would need to stop making the bills for the dollar coins to work. People always resist change!
Good information. I wonder how long ago the study was done, I have heard that the recent economy has seen many people turning in their coin stashes to banks and coin machines.
unless you are trying to stick a dirty folded/or taped bill in a vending machine. But seriously I remember reading somewhere the coin operated vending industry has been lobbying against a dollar coin due to the cost of reformatting all the machines. Seems to me though it might help them sell a whole bunch of new machines.
I spent nearly two years in Europe, primarily France and Spain. I couldn't believe all the coinage that needed to be carried and resisted it at first. You could handle all day to day transaction without breaking out the paper money. If you did break out a bill to pay for something, you would receive only coins for the difference. When all was said and done, I found out that I preferred this over carrying wads of cash. Think about $20 coins on down. (this was all prior to the euro, so I'm not sure how or if this has changed the coin/paper ratio) To cut to the chase, when they came out with the $1 coins, (sacs), I spent them everywhere that I could. Many places wouldn't take them and some that would take them were not happy about it. There is still a store in my home town that will not take $1 coins as they say their cash registers are not built to accomodate them. Unfortunately I don't see them ever taking hold unless the dollar bill is phased out. As discussed above the odds of that, even though that was supposedly the plan, are pretty slim with our government. Do we need $2 coins, I say yes and higher denominations as well, but it will never happen regardless of the cost savings due to the longevity of coins over paper money.
Sure the companies that MAKE the machines would like that, but all the companies that have already purchased machines wouldn't be too pleased.
Ok.... with the bills are easier than coins, then why not just go to an all bill society? Lets go to a 1, 5, 25, 50 cent bills also... if you'r spending your change anyway then no coins makes sense? yes? Personally I think the coins are more practical. But whatever you or I think should not really matter. If the govermnet wants to save money and is hell bent on producing more and more of these coins then they need to do something about it supporting usage. As far as the storage problem. I have spoke to my bank & they say it is a legitimate concern. They are only allow to transact with the mint $1 coins in increments of $1000. This means if they order $1000 worht and I go in and ask for just one roll, then they have the rest sitting in the vault. If I, or noone else requests anyonter roll, they are stuck with the coins. Of course, if people actually used them this wouldnt be much of a problem..... But as is, this is what is going on. I have also run into the lack of avaliblity problem, so I have used them infrequently. But as of today I am going to order from the mint a box of $250 (the direct ship program). Once I receive them I'll start using them on a daily basis.
The problem with this analogy is that half cents had never been popular in commerce, as proven by many years with zero mintage and the existence of many thousands of mint state hoard coins which no one wanted at the time (though many of us like 'em now ! )
This topic keeps coming up - "retire the dollar bill". It keeps coming up in coin collector circles, but not the general public. 99% of the public at large frankly doesn't care. This issue will never get much political traction, because we have much more important things to worry about. You know what I'm sayin' - important news. Like Brittany Spears and Lindsey Lohan.
To address the original question "Do we need a $2 coin ?", I consider this : few people mess with $1 coins, and virtually no one messes with $2 bills. Why in the world would we need a $2 coin ?
