    silentnviolent accumulator--selling--make an offer I can't refuse

My friend at the bank called me up today & told me to come look what she found... Nice! Looks very similar to brokage cent pic in redbook (2011) which lists the value at $50. I offered $25 and explained it would take 25-30 dollars to authenticate & made a deal. Is it what I think or did I skunk myself?

Just my opinion but I think your friend at the bank did pretty well considering she got 250x what she paid, with you doing all the work.

thats fine by me... I know that it was a gamble but I offered more than usual because I like to give a little finders' fee when they call me for a first crack at stuff they find. Keeps them calling me back. Anyway, I didn't lose out as long as it is what I think. otherwise it's just another expensive conversation piece. But my friends at the bank wouldn't intentionally mislead me so it's not like they are trying to make money. She actually wanted to just give it to me but I couldn't do that.

I think you did OK. It looks like a brockage by a late-state capped die. It's a great find.

lol sounds dumb 250x for a dime but yeah pretty cool find in my opinion. My bank tellers in my local bank (which every1 in that one already knows me) gave me 5 90% even when she new it was silver. You gotta love them.

I want to add: I wasn't trying to come off as sounding rude in my first reply, this is definitely a cool find. I guess what I was getting at is The Red Book is known for it's high price estimates and I would use caution when using it to gauge the value of any coin. You could very well have hit a home run here, I don't really know, the most important thing is whether you feel like you got a good price.

nice to have opinions tho and I value those on this forum. thanx. will see what the one on ebay goes for lol. If it were more off center, would that add or detract from the value?

send it in to NGC grading you'll be surprised as to how much if graded this will bring. Oh nice pick up I would of given the tell that much for it for sure.

If you were to get this graded and slabbed it would bring alot more and in addition it would outweight the slabbing costs.

Cool find, $25 seems good and when you pay a little over what you should to a "friend"
its just greaseing the wheels so they always call you first so good move.

I think what you have here is more of a strike through error instead of a brockage error. It is called struck through a capped die. A previous dime stuck to the obverse die and the repeated strikes caused it to thin out and eventually your coin came into the coining chamber and was struck through the cap. The blurred image of Roosevelt is from the obverse die striking your coin through the thin die cap. Look on ebay for this error and you will find it bringing around $20-$30. I don't think it is worth slabbing. Still a nice circulation find.

and grading will With the postage authentication will probably set you back closer to $40 I think, but then you have a certified error with an authentication #. That creates the value, IMHO

Pyrbob is correct, the proper term for this would be struck through a late stage capped die. Although they are both caused by the same thing it really isn't proper to call it a brockage except in the very early stages before the coin stuck to the die becomes enlarged and distorted.

My error books tell me the retail on this coin falls between $350 -500. and is very rare finding such a strike. So recomend grading and then seeing what kind of value it holds not bad for a $25 investment.

Eire, I am curious, what error did you look up and what book are you using?

Eire, that is for the die cap itself that struck this coin. For this coin look at the last paragraph of III-J-6 Full Brockage Strike. Herbert descibes the full brockage strike and then in the last paragraph mentions the late stage of this where the brockage design is obliterated and a bluured image of the facing die starts to show. Be careful with this book. It is a good reference but there are errors in it. This is one example where he mentions the last stage when the coin is really not a brockage anymore at the end of the desciption leading people to believe the error really is a brockage. By the way, the rarity level for this is 3-6 and the value listed is $5 up. I have the sixth edition.

Yes thanks for pointing that out ... after rereading the text you are right...I do know this text has several errors (Needed a Proof Reader) There is a picture that is of a nickel also that is described as a penny . And again this book does have alot to offer. I do refer to it offten as well as cherry pickers . Any other error book you recomend? As I am on my butt for the next 3 to 6 weeks due to a broke leg:(!
