I inherited this coin when I was younger from my great grandfather. According to family tradition, this was an extremely rare coin, and his father had placed it in a brooch because his wife liked it so much. I've found very little information online about this one, but have found similiar coins. Anybody have a good source for information of old German coins? I would really like to know more about this. Welcome to CoinTalk. Someone will be along to help you out, but you can try these sites: Medieval Coinage.com Coin Archives.com Type in keyword searches based on the legends you can read on the coin.
It's from the German state of Wurttemberg. Need the diameter and/or weight to determine denomination.
That makes it a 1/2 Thaler. Weight should be 14.27-14.54 grams. No Mintage listed. Described as St. Christopher with staff and shield, Christ child on shoulder. Catalog value VG $1075 F $1800 VF $3000, higher grades not priced. The damage from the brooch will hurt the value.
