I found a 1952 S Jefferson while roll searching. It had good details, so I checked it against one in a circulated Dansco album I have. The one I found had a small S and the one in the book had a large S. I wasn't aware of the variety and there was no FS listing. Is it worth keeping ? Which is the more common variety ?

    Thanks,
    gary

LOL. I never get a decent pic, but I can scan them tomorrow and post them. I just thought it might be a known variety that I was ubaware of and not listed in my references.

Not sure about nickels, but the wheat cent has 2 different S's on the 52, Trumpet Tail S and the Tall S. Maybe this is the difference, but I don't know...

To my knowledge, the large "S" Mintmark replaced the smaller mintmark late in 1941 which explains why the 1941-S Large S is so rare. After that year, all Jefferson Nickels were struck using the large "S" mintmark. According to Nagengast speaking about the 1941-S nickels in "THE JEFFERSON NICKEL ANALYST" (page 47): A new, large S mintmark punch was used for later production, and on all San Francisco copper-nickel coins after 1942.

Here are photos of the same size so we can compare the size of the mintmarks prior to the change and after the change. Shown below are a closeup of the mintmarks of a 1940-S NGC MS67, 1941-S Large S NGC MS65, and 1952-S NGC MS67.

If you can post a photo of the coin you believe has a small mintmark, that would be helpful.
