So about 2 months ago I gave in and bought some proof coin sets off of the coin vault....I am now looking at them and I see my 1975 proof set has a penny and the penny appears to have been burned? top of it is silver looking...could this be an error or what? pic will be posted soon
I cannot give you an answer - or even a guess - without photos. How bad did Coin Vault burn you on those Proof Sets? (Maybe that's how the Cent got burned.)
Haha...not sure how bad. I am extremely new with all this and now know that they are not a good place to buy from. Got sets from like 1968-1993? Here is a photo.
The "silver" looking part is actually some awesome toning, but unfortunately it looks like it may have been improperly stored(possibly high humidity) and the obverse has some bad environmental damage(the black areas).
NOT buying more coins off the coin vault is a good start.... Do you have a local coin shop you can visit? Those are going to be the best places to shop.
I agree with jallengomez; humidity/improperly stored. I had a 1999 proof set that was accidentally left outside in sealed plastic box for a couple of years and the coins inside looked similar to the one you have when I found them. -LTB
Hmmmm... There have been some good deals in the CT classified section lately.... you might look there.
I'd get those returned ASAP to the Coin Vault. They should be ashamed to send out 8up proof coins like that, course they will claim due to volume, we can't look at every one, so,ask them to show it to Robert Chambers so he can look up what to do in a leading numismatic catalog. Happy Collecting
