I spent the summer of 1984 in Venice (and other parts of Europe), and then they had a bunch of coin shops, where AI was able to get pretty much a full Italian base metal type set. The Fascists put out a ton of stuff and so did the Savoyard kingdom and it was all very, very cheap. I haven't been to Italy in almost a week!
Although I don't collect doins, I do accumulate history. I especially like 19th century Italian coins (including pre-unification Italy): guy
That is rather lovely I think my details are right please let me know if I have got any bits wrong Grand-Duchy of Tuscany Leopold II of Lorraine (1824 -1859) 1/2 Paolo type I Flask The mark of the mint director Domenico Fiaschi Engraver Giuseppe Nideröst Florence mint
Only one mistake! It's 1 Paolo 1831, not 1/2. I didn't have the information about the engraver, where did you get it? Thanks!
Looked up the inscription on line and it was on one of the sites I visited, unfortuantly I did not keep a record of them
I have enjoyed seeing the Italian coins...my family is from Italy, we can trace our family back to the 1600s when they started keeping records there. While it's not the only part of my heritage it is the most well-researched side. Naturally, I am partial to Italian coins... Here is an 1867 Lira 1962 100 Lira 1993 500 Lira I have a few more but the types have all been seen already. My collection is not large. Anything up to and including 1915 could have been used in daily commerce by my direct ancestors!
While this was not issued by Italy I figure, the area it was issued for eventually became Italy. (Of course, all ancient Romans could be posted here too, then!) Papal States 1721-24 Quattrino I purchased it from Allan G. Berman in October of 2009. It looks better in person. a nice even dark chocolate color. I had to adjust the scans to get the detail to show at all, otherwise it just looked like a brown blob, lol.
Had hoped that there might be something to pick up today at the regular market here in London (Charring Cross) unfortunatly there was a bit of a lack of coin dealers so I bought postcards instead LOL
If I can recall right I think I paid between £2 to £3 for it and another coin I know it was not a great deal
