The new design has been revealed, frankly I think its one of the worst. http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/2011-native-american-dollar.html I would have picked one of the other deisgns instead. http://news.coinupdate.com/native-american-dollar-designs-reviewed-by-cfa-0235/ Owell
Interesting. I thought the prevailing message these days was trying not to promote smoking... even if its a symbol of peace, sharing or a treaty.
Dunno, what's in that pipe Ken. I think in those days fellers used regularand wacky-tabaccy. The design doesn't bother me at all. I guess I'm indifferent to it, though I haven't much followed the design development and concepts to know how and why they came up with what they did, let alone the reason for representing this treaty.
I looked at the other designs and I sort of agree with the committee that the one they chose was the best of the ones offered. I think that by showing the two hands passing a pipe of peace and not showing two personages they were on the right track, but by referencing the specific treaty and the date (is the 390th anniversery of things usually celebrated?) They were doing the same thing they were saying they were trying to get away from, that is they were trying to find higher symbolism, but by the coins reference to the actual historic treaty they trended away from the more allegorical and to the historical.
