HSN Coin Collector... Say What???

I was just killing some time when I couldn't sleep watching HSN's Coin Collector show from my DVR.

I caught them saying some things that just weren't true, or at least a bit dicey to say the least. I figured that as people watch the show and catch little "mistakes" they could post and critique them here. I also found some other interesting mistakes. It should be quite amusing.

For example: Mike Meczack said last year was going to be the last year of Satin Finish coins. He said that the government announced that they would no longer make Satin Finish coins. He has now also said the same thing about the 2010 coins that the US Government has announced this. To date, I can find no press release indicating this is true.

Another great Meczack quote that I loved is: "The single biggest factor in value of a coin is rarity!"

Now anyone who has been here for any time knows this just flat-out isn't true. Desirability combined with rarity make for value. If I had to choose one of those two factors, it would be desirability hands down. Copper nickel 3 cent pieces have extremely low mintages, are over 100 years old and very collectible. Unfortunately, no big $ coins, because people don't drive any demand for them.

Post what you catch here so we can all enjoy them!

Dunno about the 2010 coins but the mint has said there will be no more Satin finish Mint Sets - that much is true.

This show is comical because often they will have Mike Meczack do most of the talking and then they have that other guy - I think his name is Alan - he will jump in things like "folks, these coins are brilliant uncirculated coins directly from the mint. You won't find these in circulation. This is a tremendous opportunity...etc."

Of course the fact that the mint makes millions of them is not mentioned...

I always like when they, and by they I mean every tv show trying to sell modern coins, try to play off on the fact that you have to hurry and buy now because the mint is only making so many of these coins this year only. What they don't mention is they're making 134 billion of them and every coin ever made has been a one year strike, thats how it works. I gotta give them credit, they come up with sales pitches that must keep them up at night.

Meczack even refers to the Statehood Quarters as "Sold Out Limited Editions". Sold out by whom? The Mint didn't sell them as much as make them for use as money. The Banks didn't sell them. The Federal Reserve??? No. Hmmm...

They've made millions on HSN selling coins. Just think If Billy Mays was the host.

I also like the "repeat" style -i.e.:

Mike M: These Statehood Quarters are made for 90 days - 90 days - and then there will be no more ever made. There will be no more ever made. These are brilliant uncirculated - brilliant uncirculated - in pristine mint state state condition - that is mint state condition...
Alan: Hey, look, you heard it, folks - they are not making any more of these. This is an outstanding opportunity to own a piece of history. The 50 states starting in 1999.
Mike M: Many of the early states are already becoming scarce - becoming scarce - in uncirculated condition.

    And so it goes...

They talk about how rare state quarters are now, then they paint them gold and sell them for twice as much.

I do happen to like Mezack. He's somewhat comical and is very entertaining.
And Mike, I've never heard him say, "The single biggest factor in value of a coin is rarity!"
I've always heard, "The single biggest factor in value of a coin's value is condition"

If Billy Mays sold coins, I would buy them in a heart beat! Unfortunately that'll never be.... He always had the same pitch for every product he sold, down to the hand gestures.

If the slap-chop / sham-wow dude sold coins you could bet they'd all be slap-damaged or sham-cleaned! ;)

"You're going to be in a bummed mood all day because I've slapped your damaged coins all day with the Slap Coin."

    LOL!
I wish that guy wasn't a criminal so we could see him do some coin commercials.
I love the "You're going to love my nickels," quote. ;)

  18. I have never heard him say that. His usual canned statement is, ""The single biggest factor in the value of a coin is condition!"

I do have a problem when they pull out a listing of "nationally advertised" coin prices to justify their overinflated prices, but never state the actual source or correctly state that most people use grey sheet. They also infer that HSN is the only place to buy certain coins when it is really the only place to buy that specific ANACS holder, at least until someone realizes that they overpaid on HSN and then puts the product on ebay to cut their losses.

Here's what one of their customers reported on youtube! Quite a ripoff, but I'm not surprised at all. These so-beezers take your information when you buy something from them and then they contact you over and over to buy more of their krapus!! Quite the shysters!! Read below!! Why grading companies would deal with these son of a biscuits, I have no idea! HSN is a company which can't be trusted, even by the companies that they do business with!!

If you know anybody who purchased Proof 70 ICG graded coins from this guy, good luck. I just had 17 ICG graded coins purchased from hsn and mezack re-graded because I thought they weren't correctly graded. 14 of the 17 were overgraded just as I suspected. How much longer can this guy get away with selling these kinds of coins? Somebody should contact the FCC or FTC and have him thrown off the air.
