Just found this sight, cool deal. Anyone know if this coin is the real deal? If so, whats it worth? The coin is 25mm x 2mm and wight is 3.7gms.
How do you know it is a half cent? The coin's initials stand for William Moulton and is a New Hampshire piece. Now if your piece is authentic, it is a true rarity, and a value would be determined first by it's authentication against actual genuine survivors .
I did a web search and saw pictures of simular coins identified as half cent. I don't know anything about this coin other than it was found in the ground in the 60's around a Hollywood resort from the 30's.
Try googling 1776 New hampshire coinage. Here is a link for you. http://coinauctionshelp.com/coinageofthestates_new_hampshire_1776.html
Here is another link.http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=1745 You may have a very valuable piece, if it is genuine.
Hi There, Many different replicas can be found of this piece. Museums made thousands and thousands selling them for a few bucks at their gift shops. Also, many cast counterfeits are also known made by dealers/collectors years ago. It is one of the most commonly replicated coins in all of the colonial coin series. In most colonial coin circles, the pieces that have been sold as authentic over the years are now being questioned as to their authenticity. The "authentic" examples that have sold were part of famous collections (Garrett, Norweb) lending to their acceptance as legitimate colonial pieces. Today however, every example I have seen is a replica (99 out of 100) at worst or suspect at best. Your piece seems to be better quality than the $5 museum copies, but most likely is a cast counterfeit/replica made in the 60s-80s for collectors.
Sorry , but this piece in all aspects appears to be a cast replica. I have seen many over the years with the same look. Take a look at the edges & most likely you will see a raised line (seam) from the casting.
