Hello, I have no local coin dealers where I live. I would have to travel 45 minutes to get to NYC and then another half hour once down there. The problem is I am physically disabled. I don't trust eBay after reading about the amount of chinese counterfeits and untrustworthy dealers and fraudulent shenanigans. I have 4 years that I need to purchase a coin from. 1960 My birthday 1966 Wife's birthday 1991 Year married 2001 Year twin sons were born - I need 2 coins for this year. Could you make some recommendations as to what coins I should purchase and where I can get them from. If you have a reputable coin store with a reputable owner then let me know and I'll buy sight unseen over phone with credit card. You can send me a PM if you would like to. I am new to coin collecting and my other post got too long. Thank you, Eddie J
1960 - proof set and mint set available. 1966 - SMS available. 1991 - proof set, prestige proof set, mint set available. 2001 - proof set, state quarters proof set, silver proof set, mint set available. All should be easy to find from reputable dealers. I use this online site as a value metric for items I purchase on eBay. I don't think you'd go wrong buying from them: http://www.mintproducts.com/
There is a thread with a lot of dealers listed. I use harlan J berk and for 1991 and 2001 you could get silver eagles. Or you might just want to use proof or mint sets for the years. I am sure others will recommend dealers.
I didn't even think of bullion issues. Yeah, there are lovely silver and gold coins available as well.
Thank You Texas John and mark_h. What is SMS? I'd like to buy silver to start the collection off with. I don't know what year they started producing silver eagles. Is 1960 covered? Thanks for the link Texas John. Thanks, Eddie
Silver Eagles were first produced in 1986, so they don't meet your criteria. SMS = Special Mint Set In '65, '66 and '67 they did not produce Proof sets, they produced SMS sets instead. They were not business strikes and not Proofs but somewhere in between.
SMS - Special Mint Set. Issued in lieu of proof sets in 1965, 66 and 67. Silver Eagles were first issued in 1986.
2001 - Silver Modern Commemorative - Buffalo. My favorite in the series, but runs at a pretty penny. About $138 to $150 uncertified and certified at PR69 or MS69. MS70 and PR70 go for $500-600. Would stick with uncertified from reputable dealer or PR or MS69. The dealer I deal with - San Diego Coin and Bullion has a Buffalo coin and currency set that is in a really nice folder for $150 (I think - maybe $165 - cant remember). It is nice. They are trustworthy. http://www.sandiegocoin.com/ Local Phone:(858) 569-5222 Fax: (858) 569-5215 Toll Free: (800) 700-2646 E-mail: sandiegocoin@covad.net
Thank You for the dealer recommendations - please mention a few more. This way I have a trusted network of dealers. This is important to me as I am on total disability from Social Security and it is a lifesaver having internet dealers that are reputable. Besides my crippled back I have a Brain Tumor and this is why I am trying to leave my sons coins to remember me by. Thanks, Eddie J
I suggest that you search for error coins in the dates you need. Here are some examples I found in five minutes searching your dates on Ebay: 1966 broadstruck quarter for $9: http://cgi.ebay.com/1966-BROADSTRUC...63?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4cf33f8f03 1991 clipped quarter for $9: http://cgi.ebay.com/1991-Washington...03?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item19c125f8c3 There is a serious 2001 off center cent for $3: http://cgi.ebay.com/2001-Way-Off-Ce...09?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3cb2b9cff9 There’s also a (sort-of-matching) 2001 indent cent for $10 http://cgi.ebay.com/2001-Indent-Err...22?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2c58f7590e Very best regards, collect89
There are many trustworthy & honest individuals selling on eBay. I think you need only look at their return policies to know who to buy from. Anyone selling something and are not accepting a return is someone I avoid. In fact the only thing I ever bought that I was unhappy with was such a sale (no returns). Otherwise, it has been a terrific place to obtain and sell some coins. Counterfeiting seems to be more prevelant for key dates or rarer coins that have a high demand by collectors. More common US proof and mint sets are not as profitable for counterfeiters, so there aren't that many of them. Buying certified coins might also protect you. Good luck, gary
