The Toning Premium Thread

An incredibly attractive coin with outstanding color and a difficult date to find with rainbow toning. The only thing holding this coin back is the depth of the toning, specifically on the lower right obverse. Honestly, this coin is of TomB quality and it wouldn't surprise me if he was the seller. I have to believe that this coin is minimum 5X wholesale ($76). I will guess you paid just a bit more than that. My guess is $475.

See this is the kind of coin that we will disagree with again.It just comes across as dirty and crusty to me on the Obv. I guess I just don't like the splotchyness but that is just my opinion and that leaves more for you guys. The reverse on the other hand looks nicer to me and you can see luster.
I'll go with $225.

 

I confess I'm somewhere between Lehigh and Duke regarding the attractiveness or desirability of this coin (even though I'm sure Lehigh's analysis is spot on). Certainly it's interesting and I love the reverse, but I'm guessing the photos bring out the color very well and maybe even flatter it. Would like to see it in hand to be more confident about the color. $190, or about 2.5x.

 

I think the * gives it a boost, so I'll say $145.

Tom sold it to the collector who sold it to me (LeeG). I got a few nice coins from Lee in that sale.

I thought so too. The sad thing is the picture really doesn't even do the coin justice. Much more attractive in hand, and you nailed the shortcoming -- it's almost black in the lower right obverse (which frankly doesn't bother me as much as some).

If a coin has to have black, that can't be in a better place, behind the bust and barely encroaching on it! I'd like to see this coin in hand.

Dang it...I don't have time to pop in here daily but I was going to say $250 before I got to this post...on well...I think that is a very fair price and could see it selling for as much as $350 to $400 to the right collector.

 

I will say $1100 on the Isabella based on when you purchased it.

 

Usually that would be too dark for me but that one pulls it off. Very pretty and what a coin to start with.

Interestingly enough, after looking at Heritage archives to try and get a gauge on the values in today's market versus that of years past, I came across this auction listing in 2004:

I submit this is the coin I now own, and it sold for $897 in 2004.

It is a bit dark, and this darkness does impact the luster in some areas. Then again it's only a 64, so I can live with it. My sense is that I overpaid a smidge, but frankly was happy to do so. Isabella's are found toned quite often, but rarely in a way that appeals to me. This coin really appealed to me when I first saw it in Mark Feld's inventory, but Lee beat me to it. A few years later I was lucky enough to purchase it from Lee (along with a few other coins) at the same price, and I was happy to do so. I also suspect I won't have much trouble getting rid of it and at least breaking even, but time will tell.....
