Whenever I sell something, I follow up right away with a thank you note and an explanation of the shipping method and the Post Office estimate of delivery times. I guess it's trying to halt any problems before they start ? But I have had very good luck with the few sales I have made. But I realize that with an increased volume, there will be an increase in exposure to kooks.

I agree gary. The only other option I know if is the classified or open sections of forums like this one.

I have had that happen to me twice. Once was a Leather Toolbag that was cheaper to send priority than parcel post the price was in the auction and I paid more than I charged for the shipping, I don't know how many stars if any I got for shipping but it knocked my 5star shipping to 4.5 stars. And after I finally got it back up someone gave me 4 stars when I charged them 5.99 for priority insured package which cost me 7 something.
I understand if the seller charges 10 bucks and the package comes with a 44cent stamp on it, but if the postage paid is on the package and it is equal to or even close to the amount I am charged I will always leave 5 stars.

I've had to raise my starting bid and my postage fees because I was losing money.

I hate to do that on my books. The whole point is to recycle them to someone who will read and take care of them. I love hardcover books, but don't have the room to store them. I only keep signed editions and have too many of those. Off topic a bit, but agree that you cannot afford to sell and ship under cost. The whole auction concept is fun really, seeing what the item goes for and all, but a profit has to be there, otherwise throw the stuff away.

They will always be someone who thinks your shipping is too high even if you pay more than what you posted.
This is one of the reason why I always offer free shipping. Another reason is in my experience, I attract more individuals looking and normally received higher bids .

I may try that. Start the bidding at $5 instead of 99c + shipping ? Still, I suspect someone would complain about how long it takes to arrive.

Shipping for USPS small flat rate priority box is $4.85. All size priority boxes from USPS can be order online, deliver to your door for free. Max shipping time is usually 2 or 3 days.

I am definitely more likely to bid on something with free shipping, and I almost never bid on a coin where shipping charge is more than $3. I was looking at some large cents yesterday and this one seller was charging $5 and $6. There's just no reason why a coin needs to be in a box or a padded envelope. I just wish everyone would just ship their coins in a regular envelope and charge a buck. I would have wasted a lot less money on purchases and I could even bid higher on their items. My garbage can is overflowing with padded envelopes used to ship one little coin probably worth $10 or less. It's just such a waste.
