Hello, I'm new to this forum and fairly new to coin collecting. I was wondering what FM and SLQ means. I see this alot when coins are listed for sale??? Thanks.
I wonder if he meant FH rather than FM.... SLQ's are often designated FH for "full head". This indicates a specimen with full head details. This area of the coin is rarely struck up fully. As a bit of a tangent.... Personally, I believe FH to be a bit of a misnomer. While it is a good read of the strike in the head, there are other areas, notably the shield on the obverse and the eagle's feather detail on the reverse, that can be weakly struck yet still achieve a FH designation (and price). The wise collector will seek FH designated coins that are completely fully struck, not just the head.
Ahhh...it all make sense now. I was looking at Standing Liberty coins when I kept seeing this. This type is one of my favorite coins. Particularly when it is of a higher grade.
