I'm still trying to learn all of this... Is this a strike doubled / machine doubled penny or is there any chance that it could be the other type of doubling? BTW, it is the first indian penny that I've come across that has all of the diamonds, the word LIBERTY is very clear, etc. It's a pretty coin. Thanks!
I just looked up longacre doubling & that is exactly what my other Presidential $ coins have on the stars. Thank you for the info!
Uhhh, the doubling you describe is not Longacre doubling. Longacre doubling is found on coins that were minted during Longacre's tenure as US Mint Chief Engraver during the 1840s through 1869.
Probably what Texas Mom has is machine doubling. That is common on the circulating coins now days. Some years worse than others.
Here's the other coin where the edge looks similar to the longacre doubling that you pointed me to on the indian coin. Only that roll of presidential coins had stars that looked like this.
So does that mean that the indian penny is machine doubling also and not longacre since it was made in 1901?
Longacre doubling is one the die. Machine doubling is caused by the die movement during the strike. Longacre doubling only appears on coins that were designed by Longacre.
Here is a link to a pdf file found on libertynickels.org that I have found to assist me with understanding the various die doublings. You may find it helpful also. http://www.libertynickels.org/downloads/DieDoubling.pdf
