I usually don't collect world coins but have recently come across a few I like with the option to buy . The question at hand , Is there a Roman coin with an elephant on it ? It is roughly the size of a U.S. dime and offset a bit . The reason I ask this is I have seen London elephant tokens but never a Roman one . If it is the real thing what's the value ? Thanks , for your help World & Ancient gurus !
Yes,there are Roman coins with an elephants on them. Here's Pics of two.Although I don't know thw value. B12
I don't think those are the ones , I believe the one I have seen has the elephant facing to the left .
Found this one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.ca/AAH-UK-Philip-I-...oryZ4734QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Do you have a picture of the coin? We cannot really guess from what you are trying to describe at the moment.
Republican Elephants! Goto Coin Archives (www.coinarchives.com) for Ancients and enter Elephant in the search field and you will get 100 hits, including this one from Vespasian. http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=115044&AucID=131&Lot=702 Elephant LEFT for about e250. You could find these on Wildwinds as well (www.wildwinds.com). The denarius is about the size of a dime, of course, being its ancestor. As for being "offset a bit" you realize that these were all stuck by hand, right? (Until about 1600 AD, actually...) So, being centered is about as likely as being offset.
Thanks for the help guys , I'm going to purchase the coins if the price is right . One other question are these easily conterfeited and how can I tell ?
