A woman my wife works with knows I collect coins, so she told me to come over and see what she has from her dad.

All she said was, "I have 200 consecutive $2 bills, a spanish dubloon (spelling?), a big bag of old silver coins from his safe deposit box, and a box of very old comic books."

    That excites me!

Going to check it Sunday! She wants to sell it all.

If you buy from her be careful. My experience with non collecting family and friends of family, when purchasing from them, usually have not been real good experience. Mostly they have high expectations on value of their coins (expecting retail) and when I make an offer they become offended.

However, it is fun to assist someone (friend/family) with organizing their collection, teaching them what they have and its' perhaps true value.

Well said. It would make me happy if there were some key dates in there. Not cause I want them, but it's exciting to get them back into the hands of collectors!

Yes, it is exciting searching though an lold hoard and can bring great joy to you.

If she want to sell, one thing you can do, if you do find a key or a coin to your liking, is offer to assist her in selling the other coins perhaps even on Ebay for the key. Taking pictures, helping with descriptions, etc. Sort of a trade for your serve.
This has worked well for me in the past.

    cant wait!

So I talked to the woman at the bar tonight. I will be going over there Sunday to see whats up. But a couple things she said was that first of all, they are mostly liberty half dollars. A crown royal bag (size) 3/4 full of them.

But what i really liked is that she said when she put these in the safe deposit box 10 years ago, there was an appraiser there. The bank was doing some promotion or something to push the safe deposit boxes. He looked through the coins and put about 15 aside and said he would give her $460 for them on the spot. She turned him down and into the deposit box they went with the rest of them.
So I am thinking that might mean they must have been some pretty sought after dates if thats what he offered and silver was so low.

I can't wait to see whats there! Everything is for sale also. I'm glad she didn't just go to a dealer or pawn shop with these. I will be completely honest with her about whats there.

If you can obtain the grey sheets to show her some close to real pricing

That would be nice. I wouldn't be mad if someone gave me a grey sheet. I don't have any source for it.

On a side note I really couldn't afford to pay cash for too much stuff her, so I will most definitely help out with selling most of it. I am hoping to sell some for her outside of ebay because of the fees. Its really sad because this is all that is left of a huge collection her dad had. Someone broke into her house prior to getting the safe deposit box and stole everything else, large silver bars and all of the albums. What a shame.

The guys nailed this. I would not recommend buying anything from her myself, but assist her in selling the stuff. Even if you sell it on eBay for her and take a comission, it's better than buying any of it.

People always feel you took advantage of them in some way and grow to resent it and you and everyone you know and your dog. Since your wife has to work with this person, it could get kinda bad for her. My dad lost a very good friend because he introduced him to a nephew. The guy hired my nephew to do some work for him and it didn't work out well. He then got mad at my dad for making the introduction and blamed him. I mean it's human nature, unfortunately. I would be very careful with this one.

Whenever I appraise coins for someone I always tell them that I will give them what I think an honest dealer would pay them for the coins, but that I will not buy any of them until they show them to a dealer. If gives you a better price that's fine. If he won't then I will buy anything I am interested in at the price I quoted.

Usually they wind up selling to the dealer at the prices I quoted to about 10% higher.

Well I went over there and picked up everything from them to sell.
Unfortunately there were no key dates, except there were 5 decent barber half dollars including a 1905 O. I needed all of the barber halfs!
Its about $1300 in silver, a $200 pack of $2 bills and an 8 reales from the 1715 wreck. I already have a buyer for all of it, and in return I get to keep the 5 barbers. They offered all of the canadian silver for my services, but I didn't want to take advantage. Although there was nothing awesome, it sure was fun looking through it!
    So here it is:
