This came across my desk today. I wanted to post it and see what you guys thought. As you can see from the pics the second 2 appears to be a little stronger then the first... but I wanted to toss this one out here for everyone to comment on before I decide to sell it.

    Thoughts?

I see no trace of the D, so IMO: a ratty 22 plain.

I'm not quite sure there is enough left of that one to fill a hole, it just might fall out.

If I am seeing it straight, the "L" in LIBERTY is NOT against the rim and the "WE" appears to be fairly well struck. If either of those are correct, it not even qualify as a weak "D". The best you could call it would be an altered 1922-D.

It's hard to say for sure.. the surfaces are so shot that I can make a case in hand for it being close to the edge... and then at the same time I can make an argument that it's just not correct.

It cannot be die #1 - obverse is too well struck and I see no evidence of a die crack at the "O".
I doubt Die #3 - you would have mentioned die rotation.
It is not die #4 - the bust is not against the rim.
That only leaves Die #2. The "I" in LIBERTY is too strong, the 9 in the date is too strong, the "WE" is too strong.

I am back where I started - an altered 1922-D

I didn't look for the die rotation because I wasn't thinking about it. I just went and grabbed it and the reverse is rotated 10-15 degrees clockwise.

Sorry, but you lose. Die #3 is 10-15° COUNTER clockwise.

haha!! Well that answers that then huh? I'm ok on these when they aren't trashed... but I don't handle enough of them to be able to tell on a coin like this one.

The coin bears a strong resemblance to many fakes I've seen. The obverse is dead-on with those. I believe this is nothing but a worn-out fake.
