:thumb:It's cool to see someone stand up and say they may have been a bit wrong. Others see it as just feathers.
An Objective Assessment IMHO you are to be commended for taking an honorable position in retaining an "open mind" and objectively stating that maybe at least this time the seller delivered that which your mind desired to view. Your method of presentation was very clever and cute, commanding great respect from at least this viewer, but I suspect many more also are appreciative. Well Done!! Rich :thumb:
Thank you. I'm no more perfect than anyone on here, and this thread is a testament to that fact. That said, I'm still amazed how this seller took what appears to be a pretty nice coin and turned it into something that looks quite unnatural. Let's see what it looks like once it is freed from the 2x2 and it gets under the lights of my camera and we can discuss this some more. I will also likely submit it to PCGS in my next batch just for kicks & grins. Take care...Mike
Here you go... Nothing was done to these photos, either in-camera or in post-processing other than: 1) Corrected white balance in-camera (grey card) 2) Reverse image was rotated 3) Resize to 800 pixels 4) Crop Thoughts?
Leadfoot, In your photos the coin looks a little oily. Do you think it's had some gun cleaner or olive oil applied to it?
Your photo has more details of the coin (bigger pic) but to me it looks like the same coin. What are your thoughts?
Jallen, That's a very good observation. The coin did seem a bit "shiny" to my eye once I took it out of the 2x2. I also see some bumps around the devices that suggest the coin was dirtier at one time. I'm not as convinced that the coin is wholesome and original as I was when the coin was in the 2x2. It may have been oiled or MS70ed, I'm not sure, but it's not nearly as unoriginal as the seller's photos suggest. Farstaff, There is no question in my mind the coin is the same coin. Then again, there wasn't any question in my mind that the coin was doctored when presented the seller's photos, either.
Just like I said, the warts are there, but you have to look for them. Notice the hole in Abe's head in leadfoot's pic. It is there in Eric's pic also, but not nearly so obvious. Every nick I can find in leadfoot's pic, I can also find in Eric's pic, but they are much harder to see in the seller's pic. Just guessing, but I suspect that hole in the head has been touched up.
RLM, I think it's just the angle of the lighting. I'll try and take another pic with the light "higher" and with the coin slightly angled like Eric did. Give me 15 mins....
I see absolutely no trace of the scratch on the reverse in the sellers pictures... Photoshop?? EDIT looking again I think I can see where it was photoshoped out of the original picture... I'm talking about the scratch from the wheat stalk to the M of America.
Here's a "flash" shot. Like you'd do to make a toned coin light up.... Vewwy Intewwesting... See the blue tinge? Hmmm....Mike p.s. Still trying to replicate Eric's pic. I think he may have used ambient light or diffused light to "hide" the hole in the head. Still playing....
I think the photo simply doesn't have enough resolution to see it, and the lighting he used (diffused and slightly angled) tends to hide these types of defects. Here's my shot about the same size: You can't hardly see it there either, and no photoshop tricks used by me....
Here's a regular straight-on shot with diffused light. Simply turned off the photo light and turned on the room lights, and set exposure to 3 seconds (from 1/13 on the first pair, and 1/25 on the flash shot) to compensate for light level: Getting a bit closer.....Mike p.s. You will note a slight change in color cast, as I didn't change the white balance and the light's temperature changed (a combination of fluorescent and incandescent and monitor lights), but I did use photoshop to correct the resulting color cast (much yellower/warmer) by sampling the grey area (actually tissue paper above a grey camera case) outside the edge of the coin.
Leadfoot in regards to the resolution being the issue: I am using a desktop zoom tool to view these photos. I can see the scratch in your lower res image.
