I finally completed my Franklin half set. About halfway through I started picking the best ones I can find. Now that it's complete I bought a new Dansco album and started replacing my not so good coins with uncirculated ones. I've been having a real hard time finding a nice BU 1950. None of the shops around here have one. The ones on ebay are at least thirty dollars and they all have dings. I finally bought a PCGS graded MS64 FBL for 58 bucks on ebay. Considering the other examples were going from between 80 and up to over 100 bucks, I thought it was the best example I could find. Now what do I do? I have a complete BU set of Franklins in a Dansco, except my 1950 is slabbed. Do I crack it open and put it in my Dansco? If I do crack it open, do I save the slab? I'm not planning on selling it. It's for my daughter when she gets older.
I have cracked a good number of PCGS and NGC slabbed Franklins to fill my books. A slabbed coin does me no good when I don't have a slabbed collection. I always save the little insert with the grade on it and stick it in my books. Acts as a reminder of what the coin was graded at.
I say nay to cracking the Franky. You paid an extra premium for that slabby and my opinion (only an opinion folks) is that you should keep it in the holder. PS: This from a guy who once believed that you should never crack proof and mint sets. I only cracked out my first proof set two years ago. Now I crack 'em all the time. Hey Pilkenton. I'm sittin' here enjoyin' a beer and that avatar pic looks like George eatin' an ear of corn. Am I right or should I have another beer........?
It's a kitty. Oh & I would crack it, just because I cannot stand empty spots in my albums if I have the coin to go in them.
