Interesting news article on a "double struck" penny. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/...28/-3M-penny-It-s-worth-at-least-an-old-Caddy
LOL I wonder what "other coins" he's basing this value on? None I've ever heard of. Even if real, he needs to subtract about half the zeros off that estimate. Guy
Both the seller and the buyer are delusional. Fred Weinberg is a well-known error expert. I would trust his expert opinion over the opinion of these two non-experts. But they are entitled to believe what they want to believe.
But remember from the article, he wouldn't let Weinberg look at the coin. I've heard of this coin before, and believe it or not there is actually a website dedicated to this coin. And on the whole site there is only one poor quality photo of this "great rarity". Soory I don't have the website at my fingertips and it doesn't show up with a logical search. As to be expected from someone who has no idea what he has. From the bad pictures on the site, it is altered.
So this Wilkins guy bought a flip over double struck penny for $25,000 in 1972??? YIKES!! I also trust Fred Weinbergs assessment of the coin even from pictures. He is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to errors.
Here's the website. Amazing what some people insist on believing despite all the evidence to the contrary. [link]http://www.mysterycent.com[/link]
That's why I said they were delusional. delusional - suffering from or characterized by delusions delusion - a false belief or opinion
wait a minute. is that the 1936 'error' in the video? It looks like some damage shaped like a wheat stalk on the right side of the coin. Is that it? definitely, as Fred Weinberg said, damage.
Gee, I was gonna start the bidding on my 88 D reverse 89 at about 12-13k. Gonna have to rethink that now. gary
