Any idea on what type of error this is? I would say the coin is in UNC. condition. Any help is appreciated.

The area in question appears too rough to be a delamination error! I would guess that it is post Mint damage.

I would say that it is a split before strike planchet.

damage doesn't ring ture for me...look above that....there is alittle bit of place on the bell that looks like it was struck through some grease too...
Also you can see the letters and detail under where it would be damaged--if it was damage that detail wouldn't show IMO....

Well, ya know how you can take a Buffalo nickel with no date visible, put Nic-a-Date on it and now you can see the date ? That's because the metal directly under where the date was is denser than the metal surrounding it. The Nic-a-Date eats away the softer metal and thus reveals the date.

The same thing would be true here. Even if you scraped the legends completely away from the surface of the coin - they are still there down in the metal. And if you place an acid on the coin it will eat away the softer metal around the legends and the legends will be visible again - just like with Buffalo nickels. So the detail you mention would still be there.

So you think Nic-A-Date was used here?....

    Hi,
This looks like a struck through error. It may have been grease or a fragment of something else. Since the bottom of the bell is also showing signs of being struck through something, I would lean toward grease filling the recesses of the die in the area of the bell and then some glob of grease near the edge of the die that caused this appearance on the coin. If a section had peeled of as would be the case in a lamination error, I think the edge would be more distorted than it is. I don't think it is post-mint damage.
    Thanks,
    Bill

It appears to be a "strike-through" error of some kind. A bit of crud was obstructing the die face.

Not at all Speedy - I think it looks like damage. I was merely trying to explain, with a comaprison, as to how the letters could still be there.

I will defer to those who know far more than me about errors. But that has got to be the strangest looking strikethrough that I have ever seen.
