A friend told me today that he read that almost 50 % of these are fakes. I've never heard this. Has anyone else heard about this and if so is it true? I have several and they look fine to me but i'm no expert.

I would not go so far as to say that almost half of any particular date are fake but $2 1/2 & $5 Indian gold counterfeits are extremely common. I know two dealers who have complete date and mintmark sets of counterfeit $2 1/2 Indians.

It's reported in many books that there are more fake $1 gold coins than there are real ones - it's the most commonly counterfeited coin there is. The $2 1/2 and $5 gold Indians are not far behind.

If you post some pics we might be able to help you identify if some of yours are. But we need good, in focus, large blow-ups.
