Geez. I am ridiculous. Everything I see that has a price, I equate it to a coin. For example, If the wife says "lets go out to dinner". I say, "lets make a nice dinner". That way I can justify spending the money I just saved, on a coin. In that example, thats like $75! Or, wow this is a great price on these slippers! I think I'll buy that proof set im missing instead. etc... I used to be a huge impulse buyer. Now everything I see (that I do not need) I don't buy, and instead buy a coin. Although this doesn't help with my cash flow, I do find some solice knowing that my coins should maintain their value or increase. At least thats what I tell my wife. Because you and I both know,my coins are not for sale! That is all.
Well - depending on the coin it might go down in value. But - no I am not like that. My coin budget is separate from anything else. Of course I am single so I can do what I want anyway. At the same time selling a few coins every now and then is good for you - you can upgrade one and sell a duplicate. Or to finance a separate purchase. So if(knock on wood) you do have sell for what ever reason you understand the process - be it ebay, heritage, consigning, selling to a dealer, etc.
Yeah, I shouldn't have said 'not for sale' I did just go through a large selling spree of all duplicate and 'junk' walkers, halfs, and silver kennedys that were duplicates, so I could upgrade my walker short set. Which worked out very well I might add. Coin collecting replaced some of my other hobbies. The one that cost me the most were "Revo" nitro powered remote control cars. That is a perfect example of absolutely no chance for a return on investment. Granted, coins aren't nearly as fun to play with in the yard.
I'm like Mark in that my coins are on a separate budget, along with my other hobbies. I think if I decided to forgo a night at the movies and dinner with the wife and kids so I could spend that $200 on a coin, I'd feel horrible for a long time. Family comes before coins. Guy
You obviously haven't met my wife and kids... just kidding. I definitely put family above all, and trust me, the kids are spoiled rotten. Another example for me personally is that I used to play Keno every single day at lunch during the week. $10 a day and maybe hit the detroit casinos once a month. So now I stopped playing and I somehow then justify spending that money on coins instead of banking it. Ridiculous I say!
In that case, I think you made the right choice. At least when you used the money you used to use to gamble to buy coins instead, you're getting something for your money. As for your original post, I think we all do that to a certain extent in our minds. We spend $50 at a movie and think, wow, I could have bought a nice Morgan, or we spend 50K on a new car and wonder what treasures we could have bought with that instead. Anybody who collects anything probably thinks like that sometimes. Don't worry...you're not alone Guy
Im kinda in the same boat, ive been setting aside alot of my coin budget for a new digital camera since mine took a crap & had to be sold for parts on ebay. But lately ive been finding a few good deals on some U.S. coins I have continued to upgrade from my childhood so its miss a deal or continue to wait on a camera that was only used for coins and occasional trips with my dad...I have been picking the coin. Im hoping I get some $ for xmas like I normally do and then I will bite the bullet for a new digi cam.
I can understand this completely mat. I also need a new digital camera! Because the 3 that I have (all 5MP) aren't great for coin picture taking. So I say to myself, 'spend $250 for a new camera that I will only use for coins? Or buy some new coins?" Coins always win out for me.
Exactly, more then likely the coin/s you will buy will last a lifetime and a digital camera will last 5 or 6 years before you wanna upgrade for another $250, lol. Its getting so I use my phone camera more for regular shots then anything but the pic quality aggravates me, and forget coins.
