Hi there, question for everyone. I have been using cardboard 2x2's for my coins and putting them in a 3 ring binder. Well I am thinking of getting something a bit better for my higher grade coins. I was looking at these Snaps from BCW and they have the foam fitting in them. I don't think these will allow the coin to move around. I received a Shield Nickel in a Whitman one once and it looks ruined from moving around in the snap. What do you folks think? Anyone use these? http://www.shop.hobbiesdepot.com/Lo...in-Snaps-PENNY-19mm-diamete-5-BOXESCS-PEN.htm
I was reading some more on these and it mentions paper on the back side of the foam. Isn't paper something I want to stay away from? Wont paper ruin coins over time?
Not if it is acid, sulfur, and lignin free, or what is called archival paper. The ad doesn't say so, but it probably is.
I personally use Air-Tite Holders and trust their foam ring type holders. I have never had a problem with them. If you do not like the foam, they make a direct fit type holder as well. I have looked at BCW products and know that they do use some form of PVC in other numismatic holders that they sell, such as their currency sleeves. While they may claim their PVC is safe, I would not risk it with any items of importance or value to you. Also, Intercept Shield products may be something you would want to look into as a system of storing your coins.
I tried the BCW's for my IH cents and found the opening was just a little too small. I had to really push to get the coin in to the extent that it distorted the foam and paper back. They were the right size but didn't work for me. I went back to the old style, thicker 2x2 flips.
Sorry, I am kinda new to all this and I don't want to be blowin money on worthless products. Is there a real difference between these two. Anyone use the second ones products? The first I have seen on here several times. Thanks. http://www.airtiteholders.com/ http://www.air-tites.com/
The first one is the manufacturers own web site. The second one is just a web site that is named after the product name, but it is unrelated to the manufacturer, other than that they sell the product made by them. You can buy Air-Tite Holders on many coin supply web sites, you do not need to buy them from the manufacturer or the other one you listed. I have never bought from the second site you listed. Wizard, Valley, Brent-Kruger, JPs Corner, The Coin Supply Store... whichever you decided, usually buying in bulk to save on shipping is the best approach, especially with the expense of these better quality holders.
Well, I went to Valley Coin this evening and got some Interceptors. Sorry to say I don't really care for them. I think I am going to go back tomorrow and get the Air Tite holders. The coin has way too much room to move around in those holders. Are the Air-Tite Holders nice and snug? Is there very little room for moving and shifting?
If you buy the right size holder for intended coin(s), then there is no movement in Air-Tite Holders. They are my preferred holder and I don't let the expense of the holder bother me as some people may feel the price is excessive. To me conservation comes at a cost and that cost is worth the expense to protect your items as well as preserve them for future collectors who may inherit or purchase the coins from you.
Awesome! I think at this point I have to agree with you. I emailed Valley Coin about returning what I didn't open and get Airtites instead. I hope I can make it back there sometime tomorrow.
Sounds good. I have heard good things about Valley and they seem to stand by their customer service from their web presence, so I hope it works out for you.
