Today's internet edition of Coin World has an article on a 1794 dollar discovered during a barn tear down. According to the article, the date had been scratched out, so reverse diagnostics were used that differentiate the 1794 from the 1795 dollar, the rock that the eagle perches on in the 1794 is elongated more than the 1795. PCGS authenticated the coin. David Pease of Pine Tree Coins in apparently the current owner.

If typical survival rates apply, it will be one of only about 30.

A large cent was also found at the same site that graded Au. Talk about lucky!

There are actually around 130 to 135 1794 dollars known to exist.

I suppose three to four times a standard survival rate is to be expected as a souvenir of the first of the Official Standard Dollar coins would be kept by those with means.

Now can we get more information on that Large Cent?
