I'm a little unsure if this coin is even real or not, but I'd like peoples' opinions please. I have other silver dollars, but never a trade dollar before. My brother gave me the coin as a present, but I don't have enough experience to determine if this is real or not. If it isn't I'd like to be able to get my brother's money back. If it is real then great. Thanks so much in advance.

I don't see anything to suggest it is not genuine. I think it was cleaned however .

Nothing jumping out at me, other than on shadow letters on the reverse, after "states" and "of".

I am sorry, but that looks like a horrible counterfeit to me. How much did you pay for it?

What, specifically, makes it look "like a horrible counterfeit?"

The lettering and details just look odd to me. Maybe it's just the way that I am seeing it.

Counterfeit. I spend a lot of time looking at T$'s. Not saying I'm 100% right all the time but this one is definitely fake. Take a look at the date.

I always look at the date, and the denticles around the faces. Those usually indicate the fakes pretty well to me. Sorry, but it looks like a fake. I hope you can get you bro's money back on it.

The porosity of the coin stands out. Defintely not good for silver.

Already done. I took one look at the date of the coin and deemed it fake. :)

Since others see fit to add some uncertainty to the coins authentication, I would suggest you bring the coin into your local coin dealers store and have em give it a once over . While I still feel there is nothing that jumps out at me to suggest a " Counterfeit" , there are just to many excellent counterfeits which could fool the best collectors. Good luck and let us know what turns up.

What about the date tells you this is counterfeit?

It's way too close to Liberty. I know, I know, dates were applied by hand until lately but Trade Dollars were supposed to be of perfect quality with marginal error.

It's also the wrong font. The bottom and top of the loop of "8" and "6" are too thin. The "7" is just plain wrong.

Nothing about the date suggests to me that it is a counterfeit trade dollar. I'm uncertain what Stealer see's . The numeral "7" you say ? hmm
