I was browsing eBay cents and saw this. I am not familiar with the variety and am surprised at the asking price for the raw coin. Is this for real ? http://cgi.ebay.com/VERY-RARE-1917-...50?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item53e45822a2
Looks to me to be a sheered digit. Possibly from a roller machine. Post mint damage and would actually hurt the value in my opinion.
Guys, that's what I thought also. It is raw and the seller is asking $3500. Almost like fraud or something ? How do people go for something like this ? I mean, it hasn't sold yet, but the very idea that it is offered like this is really, really bothersome to me. gary
When looking at coins like this you have to stop and ask yourself "could this happen during the minting process?" How woulf the incused digit on the die become separated and moved like that? I don't see how that could happen without there being other major damage to the die, and if it can't happen it isn't a mint error. Richard
" How woulf the incused digit on the die become separated and moved like that? " exactly what i thought. if you look closely at the first pic, i dont think its part of the 7 at all. wrong shape (line with a horn on each end ) plus i can see most of the 7, but it just looks worn. this isnt necessarily fraud or a rip off. this guy may think hes got a very rare error, however if he had researched it....
