This is actually a fairly scarce coin. It's the only die variety of the year - JR-1, a rarity 4. Not too shabby !

That coupled with the fact that only 51k were ever made....they should have called it a JR-10...makes it sound more impressive:D

Ah....always nice to see an 1809 dime. Nice example CappedBustDimes.

However many actually minted of this date, the 1809 dime is certainly a scarce coin today with somewhere in the range of 200-300 known. Certainly one of the top 3 or 4 dates in the capped bust dime series. Close to the 1822 dime with regard to scarcity IMHO.
A lot was written about this date and its scarcity in another forum. This seems to have helped create additional collector for the date with the result that many examples have surfaced. One major dealer for example has now/has had up to 6 examples of the 1809 dime listed at any one time.

For such a rare coin, there sure have been a lot to surface over the past year or two.....

Snide comments aside, it's a really cool coin & congrats on the NEWP.

$$$ has a way of drawing "scarce" coins into the daylight.

I saw one that looked about like the OP coin at the local Show in Marion IN last weekend. They are around, and probably more like an R-3 coin than an R-4 in my opinion.
