I am a native montanian, I miss home, the wife does not want to move there and I have to respect her wishes. I love coins, and paper money and more importantly I love Montana.

Any suggestions a quick ebay search and google search found nothing so either it's really really rare or just none ever made.

Anything that's payable in silver, certified deposite or privately minted currency for the State of MT

Yep, National Bank Notes were made in every state, sometimes also when a place was still a territory before it became a state. (Alaska and Hawaii only as territories, since they became states after Nationals stopped being issued.) You might be able to find a list somewhere of the issuing banks in Montana, but if you keep an eye on ebay or Heritage you might be able to see some come available. In general, notes from banks in western states are rarer than eastern ones, but fretboard already found at least one for you. :)

The vast majority of them were 'First National Banks' in towns throughout Montana that issue National Banknotes. I've checked and can't find any "First New York Banks" listed in the Louis Van Belkum guide.

I just read a recent article and can't recall where. It will come to me shortly. It's a fairly rare note too. Maybe is 1st manhatten bank ? The article will come back to me eventually.

Was it in a recent Coin World - Paper Money magazine by any chance? They've had some Nationals feature stories recently.

I don't see any Manhattan banks listed. There are Montana Nationals of: Citizens N.B., Anaconda N.B., American N.B., United States N.B., Merchants N.B., Farmers N.B., all of which may have had banks in other states too, such as NY. There are many others, but none that I can tell were ever named New York... that's not to say that the bank names may not have been changed at some point.

Let us know if you find a link or publication and issue number for what you read.

Fretboard you rule, I am actually from Great Falls so it really hits home. Too bad $3,500 is way out of my price range.

If you are looking for something a little cheaper you might want to try the
    "Stocks & Bonds, Scripophily"
    under "coin and paper money".

You can probably find Montana stock certificates in the $30 and under range that are really nice.

go to Coins and Paper Money and just use "Montana" as a search term. This will also pick up tokens. If you want to avoid yokens go to US Paper Money and search. Also search the description.

A great research tool to go by, especially if the items are hard to find or out of your price range, is Heritage Auctions. If you are a buyer and have a decent budget to work with you can really find quality with HA. You can set up a free account and search the Heritage Auction Archives. You can search current and archived auctions by category, try: National Banknotes. In the archives learn what past notes sold and for how much.

My catalog shows 5 National Banks with charter numbers for Great Falls Montana. But only 4 of those banks issued bank notes.
The Commercial National Bank Of Great Falls - charter number 10530 - large notes
The First National Bank Of Great Falls - charter number 3525 - large and small notes
The Great FallsNational Bank - charter number 4541 - large and small notes
The Merchants National Bank Of Great Falls - charter number 4434 - large notes
