    Hi Folks,
Well, zekeguzz started a thread about $2 bills and someone mentioned red seals and it got me to thinking. I am first and foremost a coin collector, but I have a handful of assorted notes (mostly $2's). I do not know the first thing about judging grade on paper money. So, here is a little project for y'all. I have a 1963 Red Seal Star Note that I have no idea how it would grade.

I don't know how well you can tell from the scans, but it has a soft fold through the middle, a crease on the bottom left corner, and a smudge to the left of the portrait. I know in Coins Magazine April 2008 the values were, F - $10, XF - $20, etc. I just don't know where it would come in on grade, so I'm looking for some of your knowledge. Thanks so much y'all! :thumb:

I would say its XF and its value is increased by the neat serial number.:thumb:

I agree, possibly an XF. The fold down the center is quite soft, more like a bend. The corner fold is a heavy fold and detracts fromt he overall look, and would keep the note from grading higher. The note is a bit off center to the left on the face, and has that smudge of 'something' inthe center. The fact this note is a star note would only enhance the value. The neat serial would also boost the value, but not to everyone.

Sounds like an XF note to me and the star helps a lot with premium value. $20 in that grade for the star and maybe more due to serial number. I don't collect special serials so I couldn't give you an idea of extra for that. Nice find though!

I would agree with XF, and $20 sounds about right. I don't thinl the serial number would add much though. It is neat looking but it isn't "neat" enough. I would say maybe $5 extra or less.

I'm going to agree with the general consensus of somewhere in the XF range as far as the grade. Too bad it's not the 1963A version, which typically sells for twice the money. I did a quick eBay search of completed listings, and found one in CH-CU that sold for just under $25.00. It is a fairly common note in a fairly down market.
