Being a fan of exonumia and the Franklin Mint ... I am glad to see FM
doing a new tastefully designed medal.

    http://www.franklinmint.com/Atocha-25th-Anniversary-Discovery-Comm-Co...

Its only silver plated for the look..keep in mind with silver at $25
an ounce ... the days of $29-$40 professionally made solid silver
    medals are gone.
Though they don't run a mint anymore they can still developed some
excellent product. The new owners are cleaning up the product line
and the last set of owners that liked the tacky infomercials are out!

Looks neat, yes (well, at least the one side that they show). What I am not so fond of is the wording "including a medallion plated in genuine silver" in the description. Yes, a silver piece (Ag 925 or so) would have to be more expensive, and maybe I'm just a little too skeptical ...

Well the ad text is very straight forward. Clearly saying its plated. The look is achieved. I am sure a more expensive piece could be issued with pure silver. Would be nice as well.

BTW. Why do these forum posts seem to stretch into infinity off the right of the screen? I can hardly view all the text.

The plating is done with the recovered silver? That's kind of cool.

If you're using IE8, on the left of the refresh button is a button that has a piece of paper in it. Click on that. If that doesn't work see the tech support forum for help. Here's a link to the thread discussing it. http://www.cointalk.com/t130526/

Thanks. I fixed the formatting. Leave it to Microsoft to take something that works fine and mess it up. ( IE8)

That medal does indeed look nice, but I don`t mess with anything that is plated. (just me personally)

The Franklin Mint used to make some finely crafted medals. This piece looks very tacky compared to their past work.

Here's a 1 oz commemorative made of silver from this shipwreck, that I was given a long time ago. I'm not selling it. Just thought it was worth posting if somebody wanted to find one. One of my first threads here:

I really think that if the U.S. mint keeps up the current trend of uninspiring, and downright cheesy designs, the new Franklin Mint may be a good alternative for many coin enthuseists. I will definately keep my eyes on their web page.

Here are some pics of the Atocha cover & medal which arrived today. The presentation, medal, assembly are all very well done. I reverse is also shown.

The coin looks very well done in an attractive and presentable display.

I agree, the silver plate would be to tacky for myself.

  16. It looks really nice. If it was solid silver, I would be more interested in purchasing it. TC

If pure silver though the cost would need to be over $50. To make a business case for it.

I guess you have to buy it for the design then. The design would probably would have looked very good on a pure copper planchet too.

Yeah copper would be cool. Copper could be from that which was recovered from the Atocha. FM struck a medal (back when they still had a mint) for Mel Fisher and it was made with copper ingots found from the ship. Its still for sale on the Mel Fisher online store.

Save your money and buy a real Reale from the Atocha....Then you'll have something...not trying to put another collector down...but you will never and I repeat never get your money back on this purchase. The Franklin Mint has produced some nice items in its time but most won't sell for a fraction of what the purchase price was. I like how they got Mel fishers grandson into this deal....sorry big deal! If you like the coin for what it is fine but if you are buying it for an investment forget it. I met Mel fisher in 1989 in Key West. coins he was selling then have gone down in value not increased in most cases and these are the real deal. For $35 you can buy a nice 1 oz .9999 silver coin and with today market you'll have something by years end. IMHO
