George Washington Bronze Coin 1876

I found this coin being sold locally and I dont know what its worth or what it is? How much should I be looking to spend? And what is the coin worth? Thanks in advance Im a new guy.

can you tell me what the reverse and obverse of the coin says?.....I am pretty sure this is a medal of some sort

 

As far as value, i have no clue. Alot are faked. Be careful. Also its not a coin, its a medal. Please be weary of these. they are faked all the time. The guys here will be able to give you better advice.

How much do they want for it?

 

I appreciate your help guys, The guy selling it said he doesnt know how much its worth and that he saw one go for $375 in an auction. I apologize for calling it a coin, Im new to all of this. I really dont know anything else about the coin though?

 

Can you just write the words on the reverse of the coin

There's nothing to suggest it's not a genuine G. W. copper medal. I think it is a Magna est Veritas Medal by Rudolph laubenheimer G.W.'s " I cannot tell a lie " medal The portrait is GW telling his father about the cherry tree fiasco . Nice medal. Better pictures would be very much appreciated . How much is it worth ? What is the condition of the medal ? is it authenticated ? graded ? I could help with a wee bit more information.

 

I'm in the process of waiting for the guy to send me more pictures. He is not familiar with the piece at all. He did mention " I cannot tell a lie" though once I get more information from the guy I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Baker-292 would be the proper reference, coinman0456 nailed it. $200-$300 is appropriate for an authenicated piece. I'd offer him $100 and wouldn't spend more than $150, depends on what price he is looking for though. See here for a completed auction. Edit: I found one that recently sold on eBay for $46, but it looks like it may be a copy (you may have to be logged into eBay to view listing).

 

What is the best way for me to determine if it is authentic or not?

 

I would say with almost absolute certainty, that the medal is genuine. Are you buying this at auction, private or what ? The price will be determined by the medals condition . When you can get me better information regarding the seller's asking price etc, I will be better prepared to further assist you. Better photo's would be required .

 

Trust me, that $46.00 medal, was a copy no doubt.

 

The only real way is to submit it to NGC or PCGS through one of their authorized dealers. There is not a good way, that I know of to be SURE it is authentic without submitting it. One idea would be to find out how much the owner wants for it and tell him that if he submits it for authentication and it comes back genuine, you will pay the asking price + authentication fee (should be around $20). If he wants fast cash though, he might not be willing to wait on it.

 

As far as I know PCGS won't touch it. NGC does do some medals but I'm not sure it would be worth it to submit it.

I did not see the link to that $46.00 medal, so no way I could know. We are now talking about two different medals.Let's stay on topic discussing the Op's medal. It's to confusing when other people start posting their stuff and talking about their stuff or an auction they saw 3 month's ago. You are correct PCGS will not encapsulate these, NGC will. There is an additional $25.00 fee for oversized holders on top of the regular tier fee's .

One point I'd like to make, some say It's not worth getting these encapsulated. Remember these are precious, historical works of art. Regardless whether some see their re-sale value as insignificant, and not worth the investment. For me, I want to be certain I have done what is possible to protect my medals from possible environmental damage. So for me it's worth every nickel .

 

It surprises me to hear that this was genuine. I'd buy them all day long at $46.00 . Terrific find.

 

The guy selling the coin is local. He doesnt know how much its worth and has been trying to sell it for a few months. He offered for me to come take a better look at it if I would like. But I wouldnt mind getting this from him at for a steal. What would be a reasonable offer? $50?
