Picked up two boxes of halves yesterday. Half way through the first one... nothing. Not looking good. We'll see.

unless you can afford to take $100 out of your budget, I'd spend it. If you sold it on ebay, you'd get a small premium but loose money on the fees. Best case scenario is to sell it at a coin club auction (I did this) and you'll get 50 cents to $1.50 and it will end up with a collector. Otherwise, I'd spend it.

Finished a box of halves last week and got 1 1964. Hey, it's worth over $10 now!

    Moonshine ....................

Found these halves in my latest box (no silver :(). Can someone shed some light on what they are and where they come from? The gold-colored havles are 2004 D and P. The "painted" halves are 2004 P and the Virginia half is 2000 P.

When I dumped the remaining halves at one of my dump banks there was a 1954 quarter in the reject slot. When I was getting the cash from the teller for the halves I noticed a half in her coin bin so I bought that...it was a 1969 D!

Picked up a few rolls of quarters and found my first 2010 quarter in circulation. It was of the yellow stone park design (which is my favorite so far).

 Your expertise is needed. This is my first year collecting and roll searching. How much magnafication do I need to find most errors on US coins. I have a 3x, 6x, and a 20x jewelers loop. I have searched 12,560 dollars in US coins this year and no error so far. Is it unreasonable to think I would find any this soon.

I think the answers to both questions depend on a great many factors, and there's really no hard and fast answer.

    What coins are you searching?

Are you pulling specific dates/mint marks looking for particular errors, or just looking at every coin for "something not right"?

Have you studied any resources to know which errors/varieties are most common?

Have you identified any particular "die markers" or other giveaways to confirm a particular error/variety.

    ===========

    Here's a couple of examples:

I've gone through over $15k in halves, and only found one 1974D DDO. My 10x Loupe was able to identify it, but it took a couple of looks to be sure.

On the other hand, I've found several 1982-P "No FG" coins very recently, at a rate of about 1 every other box. They're easy to see with the naked eye, and the loupe only serves to confirm that the field is, indeed, blank, with not trace of initials.

On the other hand, I've NEVER found any of the "well known" error cents, and to be honest, not sure I ever will. I frequently have a hard time identifying them even in high resolution scans presented for the purpose. I just don't see things on that "copper" background well. *shrug*

I know some of the dedicated "error hounds" just get a feel for when a coin's not right, and toss it in a second look box...but others of us can't do that. We need specific targets to look for.

 I search pennies, nickels, dimes and half dollars. I only have one error book at this time and I read online once a week for other error not in the book. I look for the errors I have read about on every coin that I can remember in my head and some I have on a sheet I keep in front of me when searching. thanks for your input.

I use a small magnafying glass I rec in a box of carving/ hobby/ knifes from like Harbor freight. But I just use it for S mint marks and to double check for an error or something.
Thats probly why I do not have any real finds, LOL
