John Lennon is set to appear on a new commemorative £5 coin. More info here: http://www.royalmint.com/store/WorldBase/GBJL5BP_1.aspx
The silver version, limited to 5000, is already sold out. A second release in cupro-nickel is scheduled.
By the way, that coin was issued by (well, on behalf of) Alderney. The Royal Mint does not actually emphasize that. Christian
The decision to pick Lennon was based on a public vote, so to say, which ended in late July. See http://www.royalmint.com/Annex/GreatBritonsVote.aspx Christian
I bought 6 of them the day they were released. They haven't come yet though. I thought they would make the series more popular because they got a tonne of free publicity for the John Lennon coins.
Just received it Monday, but haven't had a chance to play with it until now. I'm showing a couple of wacky ones that actually came through the camera like you see them. I had a light on the ground facing up at a 45º angle and a mirror reflecting the light back onto the coin. In the viewfinder it almost looked like a backlight. I haven't had a chance to do the Queen's side yet, but who cares.
I heard about this coin a couple weeks ago. In the promotion pictures for the coin, they used a John Lennon look-alike holding the coin.
