eBay rant about deceptive sellers who have high ratings

Periodically I look for Raw 1923-S Lincolns to upgrade the ~XF40/45 I have. I saw this pic and thought it looked suspiciously familiar. (it was a couple of months ago I last searched).

Why doesn't anyone hammer on sellers who continue to out right lie in their listings? I have bought from this seller before and complained coin was not as pictured, he said to return coin. When I confronted seller after checking other past sales for same date m/m that this was their modus operandi. Seller refunded and told me to keep coin. I never left feedback - my bad.

No wonder there are so many complaints about eBay. Makes me want to do the same. (sell coins) Why not? I'll be able to sleep at night after huge steak dinners every night! The seller does such a large amount of all deceptive sales to clueless or blind buyers that old negs and nuetrals are buried.

Why does eBay allow a seller like this continue to operate like this for 2 years is my real question.

I guess if you are paying your seller fees - they don't care or are they are too busy to notice or do people just not complain? Probably a little of all three.

Reported - Everyone who feels compelled should do the same. Cleaning toilet bowls is never fun, is it? But it needs to be done :thumb:

Coins like this tend to sell to noobs who don't know enough to spot crappy coins and leave the rightfully-deserved negative feedback before they figure it out.

In the past, the opportunity to get negative feedback from sellers was part of the reason, but my understanding is that eBay changed that policy.

 

You will find more than one thread here on nancye913 (Eric). He takes his pictures to be very advantageous to his coins. I am not sure just what you are trying to say in your rant, but there is not one lie in his description. I also think that if you really look closely at his pictures, you will see every mark there that appears in his coins. I have no idea what you want him reported for, but you will get no where with what you have show here. The only "evidence" you might have would be the coin he wound up giving you for free and that kind of evidence will do nothing but sink any complaint you have.

 

Okay then his pictures are a lie. blur, contrast and the other buttons are not part of taking a picture.

He states in his description: You will receive the exact coin in the detailed picture.

Detailed? what about all the details that are on the coins that aren't in the picture. Are you saying and is the concensus that it is ok to be doing this? cause if it is. I need to grow a set and do the same.

What is his return policy, if he allows for returns and you are not happy with the coin, return it and flagging him as a seller you do not wish to buy from. If his return policy is no returns accepted then file a complaint and state you do not believe you received the coin in the picture, and use these pictures to justify your claim.

In general, I suppose you could report to eBay a fraudulent listing, but most economies operate under buyer beware, and on ebay it certainly is so. Not much you can do except what you have, point him out to other people and post rant threads so other people getting into this hobby will some day stumble upon it and learn. I suppose you desire a thanks for the PSA

 

p.s. as an aside, whenever you see angled photos of a coin, be VERY wary. They hide problems like hairlines (a sign of cleaning) very well, and the savvy and less than forthright sellers exploit this, current eBay seller included, IMO. That said, this coin, in particular (and again IMO), has been recolored.

 

Prove to me what is not in the pictures. What are you going to tell eBay - his pictures are not clear enough? I cannot even convince them that any coin you can see a date (notice I did not say read the date) on is against their policy that the pictures must be clear and in focus. You don't have a prayer.

In a perfect world, it should not happen. No, I am not saying it is alright. What I am saying is that when compared to what the Chinese counterfeiters are doing, compared to what Centles/NNC are doing, compared to what SGS/aboncom is doing, compared to what numerous other sellers are doing, your complain about Eric does not even begin to disturb me. I would venture a guess that he is even in the better 3/4 of the sellers.

It almost looks like his photos are airbrushed. It would be interesting to see a true picture of the coin placed next to his "retouched" one.

How about stop doctoring (e.g. dipping/recoloring) coins and selling them to noobs that don't know better?

 

Seriously.... While there is a segment of the market that looks down their nose at this kind of business practice. There seems to be more happy buyers than disgruntled ones. Seriously.. I like making people happy. (you can't please everyone) I really need to re-think, what I thought were the thousands of $1 coins I have. Looks like I change my camera settings or photoshop and I can turn them into $20+ coins? now we are talking!..... and 99.8% of the people who buy are happy as a bonus? Nothing wrong with that! Can't beat em, then join em!

First, the coins are not doctored or at least any I have seen plus any I have heard of (less the coins he states are cleaned). The coloring is due to his photography method as best I can figure and he professes. Second, description not required. Maybe nice, but not required.

Draw what ever conclusion you want. All I am saying is that on a scale of 1 - 10, he is a 1 or 2. The counterfeiters are a 100.

Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt. You want to tell me his pictures are doctored, I cannot argue because I do not know. However, every coin I have bought from him was an honest coin as pictured. The color was off a bit and you had to look for the warts, but the warts were on the pictures when you looked close enough.

I'm not suggesting the photographs have been altered. To the contrary, I'll wager they haven't.

However, I will submit virtually every single one of this seller's coins have been cleaned and recolored, including the one pictured above.

A cleaned and/or dipped and recolored coin is not what I call an "honest coin".

Do you disagree?

 

They definitely look recolored. It'll be neat to see what they look like with proper pictures.
