Hi guys , I am calling to you my fellow geeks. I need your help to figure if this paper note is real or it it's fake. My girlfriend's dad got this bill from his father. story goes that he got this note in Saint-John during WWII. I would really like for you guys to help me out. The serial is hand written, and the note is in bad shape.
The note is a $5 Confederate note (not US). When I get home I will look in my book of counterfeit Confederate notes and see if that one is listed. At first glance it appears to be genuine but Confederate currency was (and is) heavily counterfeited and I am far from an expert.
I'm sorry to say the Richmond 5 dollars note # 24497 you have is a counterfit note. Here's one like yours with the same serial numbers.
Good job, LSM. The note is a CT-33 As it turns out I have a counterfeit version of the exact same note except mine is different in many ways. My note appears to be CT-33/250D. It has a blank reverse. The margin imprints and the designs around the '5's and 'V' are green. The margin imprints also go completely across the top and bottom. My note has plate letter 'J' above the 'a' of America and below the 'S' of States. It does not have serial numbers. To the left of the left '5' is written (vertically) 'LEGGETT KEATINGE & BALL RICHMOND, VA'. My note does not have any orange background crosshatching. The signatures were printed with the note. "Upham" and "Fac-simile" were removed by cutting the margins closer.
Just let him know that real or not, the piece has a place in history. I love collecting fake pieces - they may not have monetary value, but alot of times, they have a historical story longer then that of normal coinage or notes.
Attached are a few photos of my CT-33/250G counterfeit note. I need to adjust my camera settings. The green is green on the note, not blue-green as it appears in the photos.
