Well, there wasn't much of a bidding frenzy for this coin. Actually I feel like I stole it, for the price I paid. The coin is high end for the grade and I think, has great eye appeal both OBV & Rev. Total hammer & BP = $138.00 Robec, I guess your up . Good work. The toning on this coin is constant, cherry red .
Cool!! I bought this NGC MS66* BC Morgan from SkyMan three years ago. The toning on this one was quite a bit different from what I've seen on most of the Battle Creek Morgans. I just fell in love with the Tequila Sunrise colors.
I got my toner start with morgans, did the whole deal of different types of toning and then sold most of them a few months ago. One I kept is quite similar to this, a bit prettier but lower grade. I'm not sure what makes me love this type of toning and if I win a guess here I was going to use my similar coin as the next coin. BC does not seem to add much $$$ and this 66 is a bit baggy so $325 although I don't think it would get that now.
I think the coin has been bumped to an MS66 because of the toning and the surfaces look to be MS65 quality to my eye. In addition, the colors are very nice but as you pointed out, not typical of the Battle Creek coins. It looks to be pretty vibrant with those first progression colors and the luster looks strong. I think this coin would sell for 4X wholesale at the MS65 level and I will guess $580.
I think NGC went a little too far on the grade. I see 3 or 4 small marks on Liberty's face making 65 questionable if it were ever to be cracked and resubmitted. The color isn't really outstanding, but maybe that is due to the photo. I'm thinking $350. Chris
Beautiful toning, evenly distributed with a very nice reverse. I'll guess $650 partially driven by the star designation.
This coin was bought by SkyMan in the original BC2 held by Superior Galleries in Sept. 2005. There were at least 4 such sales. This coin does show some bagginess and are especially apparent under magnification. There is no lack of luster, although I wouldn't say it's dripping. I paid Sy an additional 10% above his purchase price. One hint I will give you is that he didn't pay MS65 wholesale price on it as it was selling as a 66 with well above average obverse toning. Not to worry though, I have no plans on playing the crack out game with it. Here is a link to a larger obverse image. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o176/robec1347/Silver%20Dollars/599375b9.jpg
I'll stake a stab and say you paid $500 for this coin, which IMHO is quite nice. I think the coin also fits more accurately into a MS65 Holder but than again, I'm not a professional grader.
Thanks for all the guesses, comments and critiques. The consensus is that the coin is overgraded by a point and is a 66 by virtue of toning. I won’t argue that point. In hand it is still a striking coin and I would gladly buy it again. At the Superior BC2 auction, I am sure there was quite a frothy frenzy, driving prices up in most all lots. All the winners went home happy, while the underbidders were convinced that the winners over paid. For those that guessed in the $300 range, please send me a note next time you see these at that price. I’ll be there!! Sy won the bid on this coin at $690 and I paid him 10% above that price 2 years later. Rim’s Cents was the closest with his $750 guess. The floor is his.:smile
Sorry, but I am not at home to get at any toned coins - if I even have any worth posting. I will open the open it up to whoever.
I know we hear it all the time that the grading services are more lenient on CC's, but this time I think PCGS has overgraded this one, and I have to ask, "Which CAC sticker is on this slab?" There are just too many detracting marks on Liberty's face to justify the 64. I would be bidding 63 money. The toning is pretty, but not really spectacular, so I would guess $450 without the BP. Chris
The 1883-CC usually sells for about $200. I like the toning but in my experience, CC collectors don't pay big premiums for toning and I doubt this coin will buck that trend. I will say that it drove a 30% premium and you paid $260.
