Howdy diggers, I was wondering how many of you are here on CT and how many of you have found gold coins? Better yet, what's the best item that you've found? I plan on going out soon, I just gotta raise some funds cause I don't want to buy a cheap metal detector that doesn't do any good.
fret never found a gold coin, still waiting. Altho I know folks who have found them.. just not me. (gee, how unusual a ?) Best find: Gold jewelry.
No gold coins for me. I have found a bucket full of coins but nothing with much value till now with the price of silver. My best finds have been jewelry as well. My worst find was a two foot piece of railroad track, about 18 inches down. Only had a probe and a hand trowel that day. It was cut in the shape of an anvil. Wish I knew it's history.
My wife tricked me by dropping a 20p piece on the sand next to my metal dectector on the North West Coast of England and I didn't hear zip! I subsequently lend the thing to a senior figure at my college who used it for detecting nails in wooden floor prior to sanding......apparently, that worked very well. If i was a collector of nails and not coins I'd be quids in! And no, he hasn't offered it back. I did find some rusty metal sheeting on one ocassion though.
marbury, Check the settings for discrimination on your metal detector. Most metal detectors allow you to change settings so the metal detector will not respond to trash (nails, pull tabs, foil, etc.) so you spend more time digging coins rather than trash. It could be that your MD was set to discriminate out the range that includes the 20p piece.
I've found quite a few older coins but on the other hand I only detect abondoned or ghost towns. I've found three goldies $1 and two half eagles all are extremely slick only worth melt.
