Hey, does anyone else here think that, if the U.S. Mint is still minting pennies by the year 2043, that maybe, just for the heck of it, they should mint more zinc plated steel cents for circulation for that year, and nothing else? (No copper plated zinc or whatever material they are using that by that day and age)

Just thought it would be neat to honor the Steelie :D

Might there be any copper plated zinc (or whatever materials they use in cents in that time) 2043 error cents to be worth a small fortune?

You know I thought the same thing, just like a commemorative penny for the significance of the issue.

RIght, Zinc Pennies are easy (but illegal) to process. All you need to do is put them in a thin Steel pan or a thin altoids can (whatever it is made out of) and set it on your stove, turn it to high and you have a zinc ingot.

Havent actually done this ;) as it is illegal just saying for "Educational Purposes" so if inflation causes zinc to become worth more than face.... I may just start "hoarding" zinc pennies too.....

Too bad copper is darn near impossible to process without a Refinery

I agree with Abe. It's only a matter of time before we see copper-plated steel cents. Frankly, I'm amazed the U.S. Mint is still authorized to be making one-cent coins that each cost nearly two cents to make.

Perhaps we could get Sherman and Mr. Peabody to work the "way back Machine" the other way to find the answere.......

I agree with Abe as well, but even if we have "copper" plated steel cents in the future 2000's can we still have a ZINC plated steel cent for 2043 if the Mint is still making them? Then we can resume to COPPER plated steel cents.

That would be really cool, maybe package it along with a WWII 100th anniversary commemorative coin.

That said, I hope I'm still alive to see it :)

You are assuming there will be a US in 2043. I will be old and gone by then.
