I found a silver nickel in my pocket today. I was rather suprised. I haven't seen one in circulation in quite some time.

Nice find... given that I find about 1.5 per box of nickels, you can assume the odds of discovery are approximately 3 in 4000... or one every 1,333 nickels you look at.

That will, however, differ vastly between different regions.

I don't think so in the City. The only one this one probably made it to me was because the 'P' was worn out.

I don't exactly live in the middle of nowhere... not in Brooklyn, but no more than 20 minutes from Center City, Philadelphia. Given that change is distributed regionally (IE; the greater NYC area) there's probably decent odds of you having similar ratio's there.

Maybe, but I find that things get cleaned out in town fast. Others say they can get Ikes from banks and find silver and wheats. I find an occasional wheat but desiplite handlng the Pharmacy cash register, I haven't seen a silver dime or quarter (or half) in about 4 years and this is the first war nickel, in at least 2 years. And I check all the change. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

Just search boxes. It's fun and a great way to kick back at the end of a long day. Silver is to be had out there!

Nope didn't see it... is it on permanent display? Might go check it out next time I take a trip into the city.

This is a small example. They have a nearly complete mint condition collection on display of nearly every western coin from the Lycia through the Byzantine empire. It is one of the truly amazing collections in the world, well displayed, and they never say a word about the collection, maybe the greatest coin collecting in existence.
