Not sure if this was ever asked on here - what do you guys/gals do after you fill an album or finish a series? Do you work on upgrading? Do you keep, sell or trade up? Do you concentrate on another or different set? I know as a collector we're never really "finished" and that's part of the beauty of it - searching for that elusive one coin or paper money. I don't have a large collection, but I do seem to take my time completing it. So I was just curious - are we ever really "done" or do we just evolve and change to keep interest?? Or get away from it for a while and rediscover it later on...:hatch:
' Those are all legitimate options. I "finished" a circulated series set of Ikes back in the early 80's and put it up on the shelf. Started looking for the Unc's and Proofs a few years ago, have 6 or 8 to go now. Finished my 3rd set of Statehood quarters last year, had enough extras to do another set to connect to my modern type set. Always on the lookout for another project, whether its upgrades or a new set. I even keep a list of collection tasks and possible projects, getting some ideas from coin club and more from my fellow collectors on this site.
I have so many different collections that if I finish one the question won't be if I should start on another collection, it is which collection is next.
Depends on your definition of "finished", yes you have completed your collection of mintmarks and dates but have you completed the varities?? do you want to upgrade some of your pieces to a higher grade....for coin collectors...the joy is being able to finish a set knowing that you have accomplished something that took a while to complete...I don't think you are ever complete...since something else might spark your interest.... good luck and happy hunting -acsf89
I agree with the general thought here so far.....I'm never finished. I have finished a few albums. Three Franklin sets and nearly four merc dime sets, and am close an many others. But, I'm always finding ways to expand those sets. Matching sets, toned sets, error sets...it can go on forever. I'll be finished only when I die I think. Guy
On some sets [Franklin halves] I upgrade. Some I sell [Mercury dimes] and some I start a second set [Walkers].
Definitely upgrade. You will sharpen your overall skills when you are dealing with the higher grade coins. Then sell the old piece on your own, not to a dealer or as a trade in. The exposure to selling like this is a good experience, and the knowledge you gain will be very beneficial if necessity presents itself. As a collector/investor, you must become good at sitting on both sides of the table
I think it depends on what kind of collector you are. Me, I'm mostly interested in getting all the dates, not on them being in mint condition. So I just move on to something else. I might upgrade some day but for now I'd rather get more coins I don't have. When I get all the U.S. coins I can reasonably expect to get, I'll move on to world coins. I'd rather get different coins than more of the same ones.
