$250 - a 1849 coronet gold dollar $500 - a crvx type aethelred ii penny $1000 - the above 2 coins and a 1798 draped bust large cent
for 250 i would get a au-ms braided hair large cent. for 500 i would get a vf-au draped bust large cent. for 1000 i would get a f-au liberty cap large cent. these conditions based on rarity/problems ect.
Honestly I don't think I would spend $1k on a coin. I would still fight to buy a handful of different coins.... however, if George was really a stickler for details, here goes... $250 1918 Lincoln (Illinois) Commemorative $500 Late 1860's Liberty Seated Dollar (EF) $1000 1916D Mercury dime Only reason I would pick the dime is so that I could complete that collection, it is the only real coin standing between me and the complete run from 1900 to current
Never did answer my own question. So here goes. For the $250, I'm borrowing a page from Market Harmony. A PCGS MS 64 FBL, 1962 Franklin Half Dollar. Franklin FBL's are underrated. MH got me on the putting together a MS 64 FBL Set. For $500. An MS 62 to MS 63 1938 D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. My first "big" coin purchase back in my junk collecting days was a VF 38 D for $75. It seemed like a big amount when I was a bingo addict buying junk coins. So I might return to some roots and get a far superior semi key coin to remind me of the old days. For $1,000. That would be a debate. One option would be a VG 1916 D Merc Dime. The other option would be 'to go west young man'. Seek an territorial gold piece. Hat tip to MH on that too. It's not just a run of the mill gold piece but a highly historical one.
I wouldn't waist it in 1 coin only. What do you buy if he gives you $250? Barber-roosie dime set 1900 nickel - warnickel set What if ponied up $500, what then? Barber quarter - 64 set barber half dollar - 63 set And finally what if he gave you a $1,000? Liberty head gold coin Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t134143/#ixzz13yl9Sxid
