This is an actual authentic error. It also happens at the Canadian Banknote Company: http://www.rarenotes.net/cuttingfolding.html Lew Dufault is one of the top dealers in U.S. currency and very well respected in the collecting community. As for the first link you posted, I would think that is home made. I almost got taken on an extreme example: http://www.cointalk.com/t128526/
One of the ways to tell if a cutting error note is fake is by the serial numbers. All sheets have "special" serial numbers that have been set aside for sheets only and is easy to confirm. This seller makes fake errors and even says in the listing that it isn't a BEP error but still gets stupid money for worthless notes: http://completed.shop.ebay.ca/$$$studio/m.html?_nkw=cutting&_sacat=0&LH_Complete=1&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313
Just like in coin collecting.... you have to do research. And posting and asking questions here really helps. A lot of the "senior" members/collectors have already made the mistakes and now have the answers.
I wouldn't buy it just because his listing is atrocious. That thing is horrible. How is anyone supposed to read it?
look at where the seal is suppose to be, it looks like he used something to take it off. plus the seal wouldnt be the only thing off.
I saw that but thought that if that was it, that's a pretty bad fake. It wouldn't fool a six year old. I wasn't sure about other things being off since I don't know what else would be printed when the seal is.
If you're not familier with errors, I recommend you get a second opinion. The "cutting error" being sold by Lew is the real McCoy.
The $5.00 Series 1969 note is a genuine error. The seller is one of the most experienced and largest dealers in US error paper money. Someone insulted him by rudely suggesting he was a scam artist. While it is possible to make fake errors like this out of uncut sheets which are sold by the BEP, that is not the case with this note. It is a Series 1969 note. The BEP did not release uncut sheets for this series. If it were cut from an uncut sheet, the person who did so ruined a unique item that would have been worth significantly more than the error note. The Seller's version of this can be read at the CU board: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=23&threadid=793140
If your interested in paper money errors I would suggest buying the book "Paper Money Errors" by Dr. Frederick J. Bart. The book has over a hundred paper money error illustrations and it explains how the errors happen. LSM
First I would like to thank all for the kind words, it's nice to know people feel that way and respect my work Second, I am usually VERY HELPFUL and have written numerous articles on the subject of errors and educating one's self in the area. That being said, the way this "Question" was posed was not to illicit helpful information, but to inflame the receiver (in this case, me) To open with the line "What kind of scam artist are you" does not say "please help me to understand this error" it says "I'm looking for a heated reply" to which i would not play a part. I guess it was just the antagonistic content & lack of consideration that prompted the reply given which, by the way, was completely appropriate and respectful even though I was basically verbally assaulted & I make NO APOLOGIES for any of the comments posted! The questioner needs a lesson in manners and the proper way to form a question to illicit the proper response. nuff said
fyi i wasnt the one who made any comment on ebay. it was just going to the point of the people who do make those "errors". because somebody has a bright idea to make cuts, or other ways to make error notes. i'm very interested in error notes, but when you look on ebay you can tell some of these aren't made by the bep. i'm sorry if i insulted anybody, that wasn't what i wanted. i should of wrote it different. i was just interested in seeing what other people had to say, if they had the same problem with some ebay sellers.
