Rather than post separate pictures, I'll offer my Lions page: http://dougsmith.ancients.info/lion.html
Here's one of mine a lion wearing a crowned helmet with elaborate lion-headed crest BELGIUM (FLANDERS) Lion heaume’ d’or NoDate (1346-84)
Nice page Doug, I was hoping to see more ancients. I would say lionskin is even more common on ancients due to the whole Harakles trial and Alexander's usage of it. I love the line at the bottom, that you can find many lions but just a few frogs or spiders. I would add to that Rhinos. I love rhinos and have only found the Domitian quadrans and a couple of Alexandria issues with rhinos on ancients. Elephants and lions and horses everywhere, and 3 rhinos????? I am calling animal racism? on that one.
I mispoke. medoraman bemoaned the scarcity of his favorite (Rhino) on ancient coins. I want an ancient coin showing a Giraffe. Julius Caesar brought a giraffe to Rome but it disappointed the people by just standing there looking at them rather than roaring and charging. From their point of view, an animal that would not fight in the arena was not worth putting on a coin?
I am sure there are others as well, (ostrich), but I was comparing what I would consider a "closer cousin" like rhino versus elephant. Maybe its because rhinos were never domesticated and elephants were. I believe they did have rhinos in the coloseum. I know it was a silly argument Doug, I just wished I could find more of my favorite animal. I have like 5 left facing and 3 right facing quadrans of Domitian. I keep buying them since "well, its a rhino" lol.
A couple of scans from my World coin collection and one from the World Silver collection. A lot of dust on the Air tite and reflection from the camera.
Usually the lion is victorious... But not this time. Bulgaria 10 Leva 1930 For more information: http://www.cointalk.com/t89008
You can find lions in many coins in Finland. This year, Vatican issued this commemorative coin : http://www.vaticanstate.va/EN/Servi...-Shop Monete--cat--2010--prod--M_2010_006.htm
