I cracked open a few unopened 1964 bank rolls (Canadian) and in the first roll I found this... my second retained struck through! The piece that is retained is a tiny strip of copper.
that's pretty darn cool. I can see someone listing it on ebay "MAJOR EYEBROW PROBLM ERROR" with a base price of $50,000.
hey it was the sixties...the queen must have experimented with different looks too. makeup, not trimming your eyebrows, etc. cool find
In this case where the material is still there you can see how it's embedded and the sides of the penetrated area in not raised as it would be in a scratch. This cent has a piece of copper was struck and is still in position. Here is a 1946 wheatie that has a piece of wire still in place: Most times the piece falls out and all you have is the impression. It is very rare to find the debris intact.
Sometimes a struck through is a piece of cloth. If you do a search you should be able to find examples of coins that have the pattern from fabric impressed into them.
Very nice ikandiggit, I especially like the very long "extra eyebrow" struck-thru mint error. That's cool looking! Congrats on your finds! Keep 'em coming... Billy
If it was "retained" you could have done a whole lot better! I sold a circulated Canadian cent over a year ago that had a small bit of debris stuck to it for $30. There's a couple of coins that sold on ebay recently: This one was sold by Fred Weinberg: http://cgi.ebay.com/2000-ROOS-10-LONG-STRUCK-THRU-DETACHED-REEDING-/400165857998?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5d2bbe6ace This is one that was struck through grease: http://cgi.ebay.com/2002-TENNESSEE-PCGS-MS-62-STRUCK-THRU-GREASE-ERROR-/180571812060?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2a0aeb30dc
