Depends on your motive for collecting.

With slabbed coins, you probably will only find higher grades. Slabbed coins cost more but building a registry set can be fun. I'd go for raw common ones, and slabbed on proofs, errors, etc.

I've been working on a MS set on and off for the past couple of years. I use an Intercept shield album for them. All are MS-63 or better. I have 6 left to complete the set. I need all the 49s and 52s which become a little pricier than the rest in mid MS grades. I just haven't got to them yet. Will probably complete next year.

Some were graded and cracked out. Most were simply nice, problem free, MS examples found at shows. I checked my collection software and it says I have spent a total of $686.50 on them and there are 29 in the album. So that's an average of $23.67 a piece so far. Although I just picked up 3 of them and they were $50 a piece.

Obviously, they're worth a minimum of $8.46 melt now so they go up from there. I'll have over $1k in the set before it's done. You can buy circulated sets on ebay pretty reasonably if you wanted to go that route.

Circ. sets can be had for Melt or real close to melt. (I just sold a few sets for bullion) Unc sets, depends on how UNC ya go...

Graded coins by NGC or PCGS are liquid if bought from a reputable auction house. Raw coins should only be bought by educated numismatists. Coin collecting is a hobby and there are plenty of flim flam men who will cheat you on ebay.
