I just acquired a set of that $8 being discussed.. nice set btw. At $120 retail value, can't imagine anybody willing to use these as actual currency!

On the other hand, let's say the price of silver takes a dive below Cdn$5/ounce. Would people start dumping Cdn. Maple Leaf rounds since they have a "face" of $5?

Was browsing old posts and saw this one in my list. I finally got me the 8 dollar coin in theh wooden box and two stamps for 75 cdn which isnt to bad. An other good thing about this set is that the $8 stamps are the highest denomination stamp ever released by the cdn post.

    Hello WhispTech:

I am Canadian and I think I know what you are talking about. I believe this eight dollar coin is a bimetallic one. I think the outer rim is silver and the inner plug is gold coated silver (I could be wrong on this one).

This eight dollar coin won't be circulating like a quarter. It is just a collectable. The government just had a survey done on whether we should create a five dollar coin, but at present the focus group said no way. So I don't expect this coin to circulate either.

    Hope this info helps.

All coins with face value inscription issued by the RCM are legal tender including gold, silver and platinum coins. Whether anyone would accept them as payment at face value is a different story.

All mints ordered from the RCM are at a premium, including the ones intended for regular circulation. So a premium is not a measure of whether a canadian coin is a commermorative medal or not.

    Hey folks:

I got some more info today.

The Royal Canadian Mint has made three $8 coins. One honours the Grizzly Bear and is made of of silver. The other two which I mentioned in my previous post are bi-metallic. The outer rim is silver, and the inner core is gold plated silver. One coin honours the Chinese workers who built the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the other one celebrates the 120th anniversary of building the CPR.

    See you all later.

Yeah here is some pictures of it. From my understanding there is also one that doesnt come in the set listed in the guide which is sterling silver and not .999 like the one shown in the pictures. This is the set that comes in teh wooden box. Wish I got the moose since that is the best coin to get.

BTW THIS IS A COIN NOT A MEDAL.

Wow that is neat. Seems like it is a mint product. I don't know why the number 8 was chosen and indeed, that is where it threw most people off.

Since the "Chinese workers" have been mentioned here ... maybe some/many of those pieces are sold in China? The 8 is a lucky number there (meaning fortune or prosperity or something like that).

On the other hand that does not explain why, for example, Portugal issues €8 coins from time to time. :)

Which one are they selling for $75. The boxed set or the individual coin. As a note its odd since I have never seen the individual one yet anywhere but its listed in the krausse as being sterling silver and not .999 . The boxed one with stamps however is .999 pure so im wondering if that is a typo. Cant remeber since it was a whle back think the amount made was diffrent too.

Anyways this is one of my favourite coins from canada.

Charlton also lists the individual as sterling silver.

Well when I bought it I saw that in the guide and had my friend weighed the coin and it was heavier.

Also here is a scan of the cover of the box set. As you can see it says 99.99 fine silver.

BTW what was the mintage number in the charlton?

Mintage in Charlton is 25,883. Charlton has also put N.I.I is the issue price column. I think that means Not Individually Issued, so I think it refers to coins removed from its case (this what I think so do not quote me on this). Also Charlton does not list composition on the coins still in the case.

Hmm thats odd because in that picture i gave it says 25,888 minted

The krausse also has it listed at lower and listed as sterling.

    very odd.
