Today I became a card carryin member of the ANA! I wanted to do it for years and finally did at the Philly coin show. Has anyone taken their certificate coruse? Was it worth the money? Thanks!
Congratulation on becoming a member. I have often thought about taking their correspondence courses and from what I been told they are worth it. Here a couple of links within the forum that discuss these courses. http://www.cointalk.com/t122610/ http://www.cointalk.com/t114851/
ANA Correspondence Courses Leon Festinger's theory of "Cognitive Dissonance" says that we justify what we cannot change. So, anyone who pays for these courses and passes them with honors will speak well of them. And I do. I took the Intro and the Grading course and I have Counterfeits here to finish. What they are "worth" is not so much what they cost, but what you put into them. If you blow through the books (and you can) and fill in the blanks and get them all right (and you can), that's that. Myself, I checked the books and found an error. The courses are a good investment in yourself, if you take your hobby seriously.
Thanks mmarotta, after many years of dabbling I think I'm ready to get serious with the hobby. Having said that, I need to start collecting key dates, and this is where if you dont know what your doing your gonna get hurt. Thanks for input!
I used to say that, but now you have to pay considerably more to get the paper version of the Numismatist. I just bought the basic membership now, and read the articles I need to on their web page. By the way, cogratulations to anyone here who is an ANA member. It is money well spent if you are a serious collector.
Yes, joining the ANA is a good move. Check out the benefits at this link: http://www.money.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Membership/Benefits/default.htm
